Ironic, witty, funny, and surprisingly nonconservative. I do stereotype my own race. I thought with Amy Tan I would be getting the usual Asian child-parent-bonding-over-different-culture stuff. But it was really different. It was a very reviting book and contains many good lessons to be learned.

Excellent. This was very different from her other books, but I loved the story line and the narrator. Once I got into it I couldn't put it down.

The plot is very interesting. The tone sets the the story in its proper pace, and the characters give life to this story about a mystical excursion. The point of view - the first person omniscient narrator is a wonderful choice for telling this story.

This book started out fantastic and got weak as it went. Still a worthwhile read, but not one of Amy Tan's phenomenal pieces of art.
