my 3rd Anne Tyler book. I LOVE her. She is funny, witty, spot-on ... i find myself nodding in agreement so often with her characters. Haven't we all wondered what might have been had we chosen the OTHER branch of that fork in the road??!?!?!!

Having tried to read this once before and failed, it was much better second time around. The situations and observations contained within the gently rolling narrative warm the heart and tug at the emotions.

This is the first book I read by Anne Tyler, and it was a bookclub selection. Very long and pretty boring, total waste of time.

I listened to this right after I had finished listening to American Wife. Big mistake. In both books the main character...a thinking, feeling woman...made a poor choice of husband/lover. Depressing. Fortunately, Tyler's character, Rebecca dumped the guy. I didn't like this nearly as much as Digging to America or The Amateur Marriage.

I'm sure Anne Tyler is completely unaware of this, but she makes some very stereotypical remarks about Asians and "foreigners" in the book that are completely separate from the plot. For example, one of the characters is called Min Foo. When she was born her father chose the name after observing her slanted eyes and black hair. Um...offensive anyone?
