This book is a real winner! This novel is for anyone who is a fan of the Star Wars Expanded Universe and it really grips any Jedi who wants to learn more about their lives.

While nothing here is in and of itself great, nothing is horrid either. Thus, the average rating of three stars. Technically, I knocked off one for the disgusting and rampant use of constantly changing PoVs and cliffhanger chapter endings as an artificial way to progress the plot and keep the reader interested, especially early on. Later on, there's a nice conclusion and decent action that anyone reading a Star Wars novel would enjoy to some extent. I did also enjoy this setting, as a grimmer universe more connected to the feel of the original trilogy pleases me more than the fantastical and childish story telling of late. Recommended for fans.

Actually I didn't finish reading this book. I got almost half way & just couldn't go on. I don't know if the book was boring me or I was just tired every time I went to read it.

OK... so we got a good plot building up. There's a little bit of potential. I like how Michael Reaves has brought back characters from before and is now tying them all together.

Thought it was a bit slow to start. The characters were interesting, but the plot was a bit thin.

New start to a trilogy set just after the Revenge of the Sith that ties in some of the earlier books.

Looking at the reviews from other readers I had high expectations for this book. In my personal opinion, although the book is a decent read and fairly entertaining, it does not meet the standard of Star Wars writing established in the last two series, NJO and LOTF. Others will think I'm stupid, but I call 'em like I see 'em.

Like I said, it was a good read, better than I was expecting.I don't know about anyone else, but I found the imagery Reaves used of the Force as being like threads really interesting. A different view of how everything is connected.I did get slightly confused about why Jax was loosing his connection every so often. Yeah, it was explained later but I'm not sure I buy it...Also... maybe it was just me but when Jax and Nick were together, Jax didn't quite seem so mighty or outgoing. Almost like he was submitting to the alpha dog kind of thing. But when it was just Jax defending himself, he was all big powerful Jedi. *shrug* Maybe it was just out of respect for his friend or he just didn't have the same opportunities as when he was without Nick.I don't know how many of you have read any of the Dune books, but I felt that the scene with the feral droids taking over part of the underground was reminiscent of the Jihad in the Dune universe, where those droids/machines began to take over human characteristics, the humans later defeated them and made a pact to never make machines with human thought again. I just felt a lot of similarities. And again later with I-Five. (And perhaps also with Artoo and Threepio slightly). The ending, though, was a bit cheesy, with all the characters ending up together... almost like a fairy tale.Same thing with the holocron, which was too much of a coincidence for me.And Nick's "death." I think it would have better if he had been sacrificed... I guess. I know he's one of the main characters, but he is starting to feel a bit infallible to me. Wondering if anything is impossible for him.But overall.... it was good. I enjoyed it. And I want to get to the second one.

Awesome. So that eve more jedi live after the order 66. Shows how a young jedi jax must face somethign from his past and how he must deal with being a jedi but also staying alive. Well written.

Fantastic writing style alone makes it worth reading. Favorite witticism: referring to gibberish as "word salad."

Really enjoyed this 1st book of the series, not only did it have some characters that we already know, but also some new ones that I look forward to getting to know in the future. Excellent book.

Not the worst of books. Still under par when compares to The Thrawn Trilogy. The story looks at characters making do after the clone wars, and moves along at a pretty good pace, considering there is a lot of setting up of characters. This is the first book of a series remember.

And it is this setting up that is often the problem. With each new character, the same thoughts and descriptions pop in. The first few chapters mention how the sun doesn't really reach down this low. After the first time, I got it. After the second, I got it. After the third, I GOT IT!!!.

It looks like it's set itself up for an enjoyable story that maybe worthwhile to follow.
