The rise and fall of a Scottish 70s rock band. Witty, clever and compassionate, this was the first Iain Banks book I read, and I've been a big fan ever since.

I loved this book though it took me a while to get into it. I loved the character Wierd and the fact that after all the blood, drugs, music, booze, comedy and madness, it is in fact a love story.Recommended by David

I like the characters in this book and the way they are brought together, it jums around a lot though.

Enjoyed it very much, written from the point of view of a guy from Glasgow and follows his life friends and relationships from growing up in Glasgow, thru his rise to international rock stardom...and back again to self imposed anonymity following a terrible Spinal Tap-esque tragedy. Recommended!

after reading the wasp factory which was brilliant,i was sooo disapointed and bored by page 32 ,i however read the whole book and have realised its 3 hours of my life i wont get back.

This was the first Iain Banks book I read, and immediately got me hooked! Espedair Street concerns the life of a member of a rock band through some stormy experiences leading to a personal crisis and ultimately a happy, romantic ending that some might find a bit cheesy, but I love it. What makes Banks so masterful is his gift for building a sense of tension. Occasionally, he plays with the reader and takes them off on an unexpected tangent. Anyone who ever wanted to be a rock star should read this and be grateful they never made it!

A wonderful deconstruction of the experience of fame and disatisfaction with everything society is craving from fame to wealth to escapism. Banks draws you into a world so tangible and engaging, I loved every word of it.

Great book which slowly reveals more of the world and the characters that inhabit it, as yo work your way through. And you've got to love the ending - total rock star way to go!

A really fun book from start to finish that doffs its cap to the great rock bands of the past as well as creating a compelling interesting narrative. Just pure well-written fun.

i loved this book, i felt a great connection to the main charectar in the form of a daniel weir through his jounreys he expieriences life, love and loss. a beautiful tale.
