You can tell that Ishmael Beah is not a writer - he is simply a person telling his own story. It is written in a plain, down to earth manner, and I like the honesty that this creates. The story is very emotionally taxing, and it is so hard to imagine that these things still happen today while many of us live such sheltered lives.

Wow. How a story like this makes its way out into the world intact is a marvel. Hard to read and hard to put down.

I read this book twice! I definitely recommend it. It was a humbling experience to read and made me think differently at my life. It highlights the problems of child soldiers in different African countries (and elsewhere). Although this story can be difficult to read because of the terrible experiences Beah recounts as a former child soldier, it is also a story of hope.

I have relatives that lived in Sierra Leone and they experienced a lot of what they talk about in here. It is eyeopening and painful.

those who don't live in a war situation have romantic views of the war, for them, it's not more than change of regimes. they don't understand the little boys and girls who are traumatized by fighting.

that's ishma'il's long way gone!

Story of a boy soldier (more like slave) in Sierra Leone. Very hard to believe this is going on today. If you can bring yourself to face true tragedy, worth a read.

Moved, shocked and saddened are all completely inadequate words to describe the impact of this book on me. Ishmael's retelling of his innocent childhood being ripped apart by gruesome civil war and the dramatic ways in which it impacts his life is equal parts horrific and heroic. My heart breaks for the suffering of the men, women and children of Sierra Leone and their continued fight to overcome the effects of more than a decade of unfathomable violence.

We have all heard about this from the news, but to actually read the story told by a victim of this appalling form forced recruitment makes your hair stand on end. I hope that there is some organization that I can make some contribution to regarding this. I am going to look into it further.

This book unsettled me in a way that few books actually do. It's one of those tomes that sticks with you long after you've finished. For me, the most poignant/disturbing aspect of it is the fact that the narrator is only two years older than I am. It's so surreal to know that such things were going on to people my age all the way on the other side of the world.

When I was in 6th grade, I had to worry about trying to look cool while going through puberty. The author of this book had to dodge bullets in the African jungle and commit unspeakable atrocities. That being said, this book is extraordinarily compelling. It should be read by any asshole in the US that complains about traffic or not getting enough cream in their coffee or any other superficial bullshit that contributes nothing to society.

Poignant and courageous memoir of a Ishmael Beah, a child soldier from Sierra Leone, that captures how the civil war impacted his life and country.
"...the problem that is affecting us children is the war that forces us to run away from our homes, lose our families, and aimlessly roam the forests. As a result, we get involved in the conflict as soldiers, carriers of loads, and in many other difficult tasks. All this is because of starvation, the loss of our families, and the need to feel safe and be part of something when all else has broken down."
