It took me forever to get through, despite being a pretty small book. I liked some stories better than others, but all were written in a kind of jargony, stream-of-consciousness style that made it difficult to follow.

Decent collection of stories, varying from terrible (Dreaming of the Dead) to great (Beethoven was One-Sixteenth Black, A frivolous woman, Alternative Endings.) Like another reviewer said, she writes like a pro, but this can't be her best work.

better than the above reviews suggest, especially when seen in continuity with previous thinking. it took a while, and there is some apparent superficialty, but the essential Gordimer is there to be found. but then again, I am deeply grateful for her ealier work. and really, it is short enough to allow you fill in the fragments with your own experience and still get on with your day. it seems to me that this is exactly what Gordimer should be writing at this time.

The stories just got better and better. Don't stop reading after the 2nd one, it's worth the wait.

Plesant lecture for the night. Nice tales, intelligent andwith a strange taste of familiarity, the one Wittgenstein called "family's air". I've loved the most "Allesverloren".

A nice dose of Nadine without the burdens of a deep read.

gordimer writes like she's a nobel prize winner but this book doesn't really cut it. i don't think i'd really recommend it.

Superficial? No way! Most of these stories are worthy of Gordimer's Nobel Prize status. "Allesverloren" was my favourite too.

I was expecting something better from a Nobel Prize winner, especially after having read her novel 'A World of Strangers' (which I think I'll read again, by the way). The first story, 'Beethoven was One-Sixteenth Black', is really worth reading, at least because of the curious title... but you won't find any apartheid story in this book. I agree that there's a degree od superficiality to the stories: it's not a deep read. But then again, if you're not looking for any commitment (and you never get enough commitment speaking about South Africa) it's an enjoyable read!
