I think this was a must read for the political time- in the catergory of Woodward and Bernstein's earlier books. I think also it was more exciting when the author was anonymous and not Joel Klein with Time. There was this magic to it- and the Clinton phenom- about how he connected with people, still holds up. It also had "true believerism"- which is something we do or not fall victim to every election cycle, as we look for that perfect candidate, even forgiving trangressions because we want to believe in something so bad- something to live up to a the myth of JFK and the president. Its hard- we shattered that with LBJ and Nixon in the 70s and only look back to lament that we do not have any inspiring leaders. We then easily fall into the trap of believeing in anyone that appears fresh or says they are about change (which we all know is rule 1 in any campaign seeking office)....

Stares behind the curtain at the pageant that is the American Presidential Primary process, and in the macro, American campaign politics at large. A warts- and-all character study, with America as its chief character. Thoroughly entertaining, and too farce to be fiction.

Is it just me, or is this a little too clean for behind the scenes politics? it's a bit watered down, imo. still a page-turner, though.

If you like politics, this is a novel for you!!!! This is a great novel written about the inner workings of a Presidential Campaign. This has been rumored to be a book about President Clinton's 1'st Presidential Campaign. If you dont like to read, watch the movie, its very close to the book.

If you ever wanted to know what the presidential race is really like, forget the tv debates, forget the campaign slogans, just read this book, and prepare to be frightened.

Utterly fascinating take on modern politics. What surprises even more than the 'been there' knowledge of the author is the humanity of it. The real mix of deception and honesty, mistake and triumph that is real people; even politicians and the machines that run them.

For anybody who has ever wanted a behind-the-scenes look into an American presidential campaign; this book is a spinning, wild, wry, and unbelievably touching story of the 1990's political landscape, and the hysterical people who ran it.
