At first I thought there was too much character and scene development but it doesn't take one long to figure out that this book is one of a kind and well worth the read! Not often is an author able to evoke stong emotions in a reader but Verghese has achieved this goal!

A really good read. The author spoke at my white coat ceremony and gave all the students a signed copy. He is a gifted writer and I enjoyed the medical aspects of the story.

Excellent novel. Set in Ethiopia, a tale of twin brothers born under unusual circumstances...well, that's simplifying things, but I would highly recommend this book. Thanks to Andrea O for the original recommendation!

Ethiopia, conjoined twins, pregnant nun, doctors in a clinic, Harvard Med -- it's like Grey's Anatomy meets Kite Runner. I loved it, but it has really discouraged my own writing because this is the book about relationships within a geographical context that I wish I had written.

This book is like an epic saga about a family of surgeons, set mostly in Ethiopia. It's a great escape. I did not want it to end.

Excellent, amazing, must-read. A physician author who brings a great sense of humanity to his characters and the Ethiopian culture. Wonderful story of parent love - both biological and circumstance. I love the characters and could not stop reading this book. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a moving story about family and loss. It takes a while to get going but the last quarter of the book is gripping. Stick with it and you will be glad you did.

A great read- the type of novel that manages to engage the reader in the storyline while also teaching about a subject. In this case, I learned more than I ever thought I was interested in about medical procedures (ask me about a vasectomy..:)
The Author, a physician himself was careful to try to keep the medical portions of this book somewhat layman friendly. Great characters, great story and one of those books that was hard to put down.

There are two tests of a great book: First, you can't wait to finish it, and second, you miss it when it is over. Abraham Verghese has written such a book. I found myself reading it in 100-page chunks at a time. Now, I wish there had been another hundred pages or so.
The central characters of the tale are Marion and Shiva, twin boys born in the most unlikely of circumstances in a mission hospital in Addis Ababa and raised by an Indian gynecologist and her internist-turned-surgeon husband following the tragic and shocking death of their birth mother. Their childhood years are punctuated by civil wars and attempted coups. Their surrogate father is imprisoned because of his suspected involvement in a plot to overthrow Emperor Haile Selassie.
Despite an almost mystical emotional bond, Marion and Shiva are polar opposites: One is studious, the other intuitively gifted; one passionately loves their nanny's daughter while the other is incurably carnal - a conflict that leads to estrangement and suffering. In the end, however, the disparate threads combine to produce an ending almost as shocking as the beginning, and sacrifice leads to an unimagined kind of wholeness. If all this seems vague, it is deliberately so: I don't want to deprive readers of the wonderful discoveries that come along the way.

Still reading this book, but I enthusiastically recommend it to anybody remotely connected to healthcare, those who have an interest in Africa or anyone who appreciates beautiful use of the english language, and an emotionally as well as intilectually brilliant story. Once again Abraham Verghese has floored me with his prose, sensetivity and range. Truely one of the best books I've read in a long while.

I really liked this book. It was a nice surprise because I didn't expect to like it, but once I got into it, the story really grabbed me. The pace is a bit uneven, and some parts were a little wordy, but the story keeps you interested. I sort of felt that the backdrop of Ethiopia could have been anywhere - yes, the story did bring aspects of the coutry's history into it, but I just didn't get a strong flavor for it. Still, all and all, and excellent read. I was crying at parts, and I loved that the book had a real ending - definitely tied up in a bow, but it was fitting for this story.

Good old-fashioned type novel, set mostly in Addis Ababa so I learned a lot about Ethiopia. This author is good with descriptions of place and can vividly evoke the sounds and smells of his exotic (to me) places. Some scenes were a bit predictable and perhaps a little contrived, but in general, Dr. Verghese writes well about the gamut of human emotions, with wonderful characters, along with a mostly credible story line.

So well written that I could not put it down and kept reading faster and faster such that I know I will read it again to discover what I missed as well as to appreciate the intricate beauty of Verghese's words.

Page 286: Gosh sighed. "I hope one day you see this as clearly as I did in Kerchele. The key to your happiness is to own your slippers, own who you are, own how you look, own your family, own the talents you have, and own the ones you don't. If you keep saying your slippers aren't yours, then you'll die searching, you'll die bitter, always feeling you were promised more. Not only our actions, but also our omissions, become our destiny."
