 Summary

A remarkable author of five of her very own volumes of autobiography, Maya Angelo paints a picture of the darkest period in America known to mankind. It was a period in which the black community were breaking free from the bondages of slavery enforced on them by the white man. She describes the people, the challenges and experiences she has had to face and overcome as a mother, a single woman, a wife, a singer, a dancer, an actress, an activist, an editor and a writer. This journey took her across the continent from New York back to her motherland Africa.

Opinion

The book doesn’t really answer the title of the book. I am left questioning still what was her heart. What worked well was the description of the different civil movements taken place at the time but I am still left asking so what was her heart.

I thought maybe the heart of a woman is about adventure, surviving or to be wanted even when life throws its worst at you. Not sure.

Loved the sense of humour here and there. Made me laugh a couple of times. The scene was described in such a way that I could visualise it.

A pointed account of a black woman's perception of America in the 50's and 60's. Includes her meeting of Billie Holliday and Malcolm X.
Insightful memoir through a black american's eyes in the 50's-60's.

I love Maya Angelou. The first time I was aware of her was during the first inauguration of Bill Clinton where she read her own poem for the event in his honor. I was captivated by her immediately. She is unbelievably honest, strong, intelligent. One of the most impressive women I have read, listened to and seen. I can't say enough about her.
