While I like On Beauty better, this is such a smart, funny, incisive land terrificly written look at the British immigrant in a time when great change was taking place in the country. Zadie can break your heart and make you laugh almost at the same time; she can be both deadpan and whimsical and, I have to say, I loved her use of the fantastical towards the end of the book, it gave the book an extra flair it had flirted with earlier and so, it fits quite nicely. I loved watching how the story became more and more about the families of Samad and Archie and yet, at the end, it's brought back to them and to the basis of their friendship. An amazing ending, one that does not fit the natural sequences of denoument, and for that, I like it even more. Her characters are so sharply written and while the scope is larger here than On Beauty, she shows how masterful she is at weaving a tapestry.

This book was a multicultural, social commentary whirlwind. The writing is so strong and confident that it swept me up from page one. It is a bit long and does jump around a bit and has a huge agenda, but it all comes together beautifully in the end. Funny, creative, thought-provoking, clever, and downright exciting at the end, I flew through this book with pleasure. It rips apart the multicultural aura of latter half 20th century Britain, and goes after animal rights and cellular engineering as well. Well drawn characters, a bold and in-your-face writing style, and an intricate plot propel this tale for its 550+ pages. Highly recommended for the right bidder.

Awesome story about people from different cultures, ages, and perspectives. Excellent character details and dialogue.

An unconventional novel which tackles multiculuralism, the immigrant experience, religion, class, history, fate and even genetic research. I will admit that i did like some of characters and there were parts I really enjoyed but for the most part I found it almost too ambitious and the ending hurried.
