This was a very good book. If you want to learn about history that a public school won't teach you, this is great. Things like what led to the dual between Hamilton and Burr. Or why did our founders avoid the issue of slavery?
I wouldn't say this is a "sexy" read. It won't soon become a movie. But if you have read 1776, John Adams, and many of the other main stream books. This is a good compliment.

Great book once I got past the first chapter. Brings great detail to things barely covered in history class, such as the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. It also opened my eyes to things never taught in history class, such as Congress' attempt to abolish slavery in 1790! A must read for anyone interested in the history of this country and it's founders.

Nice summary of the lives of several key Revolutionary War figures. Don't expect a lot of detail, though. The key word here is "summary."

An extremely accessible non-fiction. Not only does Ellis manage to steer clear of too much information in too little page space, but he also makes everything extremely readable. His characterizations of the Founding "Brothers" are mostly the reason for this, making these painted portraits real, breathing men. You feel as if you almost know these guys, despite the fact that... well, you didn't. There were a few draggy chapters, especially the one dealing with slavery, but all in all, it was an easy, informative and sometimes intriguing non-fiction read, which is pretty outstanding in its own right.

America's revolutionary landscape. Sometimes a bit tedious, but generally a quick and rewarding read. I've been on a Revolutionary kick lately, so this fits in well and nicely compliments 1776 and John Adams.

An excellent look at some of the founding stories that we learned as school children: Burr v Hamilton Dual, Jay's Treaty, Jefferson/Adams correspondence. It provides an excellent background and places these simple stories in the context of the complexity that any human endeavor always entails.
