Amazing, but not surprising considering Murakami's a genius.

I really enjoyed Murakami's debut. It reads like a detective story - a metaphysical detective story. It felt a little disjointed for the first third, but then all the elements started to coalesce. The ending is full of grace, as "The Rat" proves his worth.

The writting is good but I didn't like the story. And yes, they are really looking for a sheep.

I have just started but lines like this amaze me: " I stepped out of the shower and died my hair, rubbed on body lotion, cleaned my ears. Then to the kitchen to heat up the last of the coffee. Only to discover: no one sitting at the opposite side of the table. Staring at that chair where no one sat, I felt like a child in a De Chirico painting, left behind all alone in a foreign country. Of course, a tiny child I was not. I decided I wouldn't think about it and took my time with my coffee and cigarette."
I think the translator, Alfred Birnbaum, completely understands Murakami's voice. I wish my Japanese were better to read the original Japanese, but this translation is like jazz music.

Good. Murakami has a gift for setting a mood of restrained melancholy, and here it serves as the wrapper for a story full of thickly layered symbolism. Sometimes a bit esoteric due to the historical references, but still an enjoyable read.

Interesting read. Much better read than most literature, but within Murakami's own amazing universe, this one floats closer to the middle.

Many authors can manage a surreal short story but Murakami is the only one I know who can keep it up for the length of a novel. This story seems to be about names, but it will take some additional readings and maybe some insights from others for me to really get to the bottom of that idea.
