Tanizaki was an amazing writer! Naomi is both pitiable (and intriguing, from a feminist standpoint) and infinitely hate-able. The question of who is to blame for this disastrous outcome of East meets West, and who is really in control of the situation leaves readers in agony at the end of the novel, as only a talented author can do.

Frustrating!! It's blurbed as being funny and bizarre, and all of these things, but I found it frustrating. The main character (told from his point of view) is OBSESSED with this woman, Naomi. Even when she's sleeping around, he almost doesn't care, he just wants her to stay with him. He'll do anything for this woman. I want to strangle him! However, it is a good look at the Japanese infatuation with the West.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the main character in this book and at times it seemed to drag on. The ending, however, is phenomenal.
