K, the narrator is in love with Sumire, a girl he met in college. Sumire is in love with Miu, a married business woman. Got your attention yet? K soon gets a call from Miu about Sumire's disappearance during a trip to Greece and he makes the trip to help look for her.
I can't write anymore than that without giving it away but I would definitely recommend this book. Very easy and quick to read but includes a lot of thought and meaning throughout.
This is the first book that has made me want to stay up through the night to finish in a very long time. About 200 pages. The prose is beautiful, the characters easily distinguished and the story interesting.

A slim volume, more novella than novel, the book explores some of the more familiar Murakami themes - loss, alienation, parallel existences - set against a backdrop of Greek island sunshine. The mystery of Sumire's disappearance helps keep the pages turning, and the ending is pleasingly amibiguous.

Thế giới có phần mới mẻ hơn sau khi mình đọc cuốn này lần thứ 2.. Và cũng như mục đích của tác giả, mình đã tự đặt câu hỏi: "Rốt cuộc thì tôi là ai trên cõi đời này?"

I must confess that this was my first Murakami, and I found it so amazingly onirical, a dream of isolation and angst in the beautiful flow of life and its joys. Overall a short novel that lesser writers would have turned into a cheesy romantic story or a gory tale of desperation, is a beautiful act of hope and love from the narrator to the main character.

Like most Murakami novels, this one sucks you in and won't let you sleep. Wonderful! Common and familiar, the story soon becomes magical and extraordinary. Only a genius could write this.

Incredible. A lot less epic and expansive than other things I've read by him but the smaller cast and tighter narrative work effortlessly. Such good writing, the 3rd or so final chapter when he is leaving the island in Greece is some of the most beautiful writing I've read in a long time. One of my new all time favourites. 100% recommended.
