Like many, I read this as a child, and really did not appreciate the incredible detail and research that Defoe must have invested in his manuscript. I am in mid re-read and can thoroughly recommend it. Will report again once completed :) Now completed it still remains in my best book heap, tho it has been mentally stamped 'unsuitable for kiddies!!!'

This is very much just an okay book. Seeing one hears so much about it, it is worth seeing what all the talk is about. It is interesting that Defoe is working absent of a tradition of english novels, his being one of the first, and how he develops it in light of that. The amount of detail is impressive and lends the story to its claim as a factual account, but can sometimes border on digressive without the interest of being particularly instructional. Once Crusoe leaves the island (spoiler), I quickly stopped caring.

Read it because you probably should.

I had to read it for a class. All in all, I actually enjoyed this novel. It was definitely a lenghty one, but still entertaining emough. That being said, I'm amazed at how many people qualified Crusoe the character as an inspiration character. really? I do not know if it simply because I recently wrote an essay on this particular topic, but from my point of view, Robinson was filled with character flaws, and was not that of an inspiration character. Did I enjoyed the novel? yes. but it wasn't because I deeply looked that character as a role model. far from it. (28)

The main thing I enjoy about this book is that it actually looks at issues about the meaning of life and learning from adversity. Thoughtful introspection makes novels less superficial.
Enjoyed the book immensely, especially the struggles depicted when Crusoe begins to evaluate his life, the meaning of life, learning from mistakes, and the angst of feeling like he has things all together at one moment, only to have his peace shattered again and having to work through another difficulty. The ups and downs made the story realistic.
There were a few odd things, like the repetition of parts and Crusoe's assumption that less educated people are to be servants and slaves no matter how clever and able they may be, or how "free" they once were. After his own enslavement, it seems he would have developed a more enlightened viewpoint.

Okay, people, there is a reason everyone talks endlessly about the classics. And that reason is that the classics are good. After years and years of seeing references and subtle paraodies of the marooned man I finally got around to reading the story.

And wow, is it an awesome book!

Though this is utterly fictional, it writes as the account of the person (yes, yes, I have seen this style many a time). This was back in the day, so it was pretty courageous thing to do.

To put it shortly, this is about a man (guess his name) who takes to the seas in various stages of sin. His heaven-sent punishment is to wind up on his own island to seek redemption.

Besides the deep spiritual themes, the book is packed with adventure, action, and, dare I say it, humor. Despite the many years on the island, Crusoe is as practical as ever and is quick to make a life for himself despite all the various island dangers.

The writing is clever, to-the-point, and surprisingly wry. The pacing is wonderful, and one can't help but get up in the understated adventure.

Awesome.

Expecting to read a childhood adventure story, I was pleasantly surprised to find a very plausible 'castaway' story accurate to the time of writing. The story gives a 17th century world reaction to the 16th century Spanish massacre of the SA natives, touches upon the English dislike of Papism, details the transfers of credit informatively, and especially, shows how thankfulness for one's fortune, whatever it may be,is a fitful response to events. Today's readers will react to the issue of slavery and Catholics will dislike to read it for the gentle aspersions cast their way. Honest folks will notice that Catholic people are treated with respect despite the Papist political sentiments expressed. No wonder this book remains a classic.

It's been a really long time since I sat down and tried to read this particular classic, and now I remember why it has been so long. Now I would like to say that it had nothing to do with the fact that times where different and thus people treated others differently. When reading such works, one has to take into account that the people then didn't think like we do now and take that into account. The main reason that I found this book difficult to read was due to the language of the times, which made it hard for me to fully immerse myself in the story. The rest of it is simply that it seemed a rather slow story to me, and therefore it was hard for me to want to pick it back up again once I set it down.

So, while I think this is a book that most everyone should try and read at least once as it is one that has stood the test of time, I doubt it is one that I myself will be picking up again anytime soon.

Favorite quotes/passages:
He bade me observe it, and I should always find that the calamities of life were shared among the upper and lower part of mankind; but that the middle station had the fewest disasters, and was not exposed to so many vicissitudes as the higher and lower part of mankind.

Though my mother refused to ask my father's permission, yet, as I heard afterward, she reported all the discourse to him. My father, after showing a great concern at it, said to her with a sigh, "That boy might be happy if he would stay at home, but if he goes abroad, he will be the most miserable wretch that was ever born: I can give no consent to it."

This is an epic about an man in motion and transformation. Robinson Crusoe's lust for adventure brought him to and island where he would live alone from almost thirty years. This is a wonderful read...chock full of old fashioned moral lessons to be gleaned. This book is widely regarded as the first English novel, and is frequently listed on top 100 lists of all time books.

Totally loved this book. It wasn't even hard to understand at all, considering it was published in 1719. Very entertaining. A favourite.

This book was one of the most difficult books I've ever picked up, and it left me bored. It's a book not for every audience, and especially not for those who prefer the progression of the plot to go hand-in-hand with action. This is a completely introspective book.

I think what turned me off most about it was the unrealistic convenience of a lot of things that allowed Crusoe to survive, and most especially his religious dellusions. The book seemed to be pushing the message of "you have to find God to be saved" a little too much for my taste.

Pretty decent, I gotta say. I did not like the ending, as it drug on and didn't really follow canon with the adventures he's known for. But I was very excited at about halfway on with the footprint. I expected less than I received. Worth the read.

Ever since I read an (extremely) abridged and illustrated version as a child, I'd been wanting to read the full story. I must say I thoroughly, but I was a little put off by the ending. I would have thought Crusoe would have voluntarilly returned to the island after being unable to adjust to normal society again... but I suppose they didn't write like that back in those days. Perhaps I'm thinking too much along the lines of LOST. Hah-hah.

Anyone who thinks they know the story of Robinson Crusoe needs to read this full unabridged version. It is no so much about a man marooned on a desert island as it is about a man struggling with the dilema of what is sin and what is reward and punishment.

It is also a cracking adventure story and the 'boring bits' about what is going on in Robinson's mind are not boring at all but the key to the whole story.

Absolutely brilliant. A final point, it does more to explain the mind set of europeans towards slavery at that time than all the academic papers put together.

An adventure story about a guy who is shipwrecked on an island and learns to be self sufficient. while there are obvious commentaries about how the europeans viewed the natives of the countries they were colonising at that time, the book also looks at how Robinson's relationship with God evolves through his stay on the island and how he is 'rewarded' for his piety. It is almost unbelievable that a gentleman could have discovered pottery/ farming/ etc at the pace that he did tho. I found the pace of the book is slow at certain portions, and the ending was rushed. I'd say this was ok, but not great.

Oh my gosh this book was terrible! I wish I had of looked further into it before actually getting and reading this book. I gave it two stars because it was something I had heard about before and someone thought well enough to make a movie of it. I'm glad to be able to say that yes I've ready Robinson Crusoe but it's not a book I would ever recommend to anyone. The last 1/4 of the book was pretty good with a disappointing ending. The first 3/4 of the book though seemed like Defoe just wanted to increase the length of his book and many times I thought I was re-reading a page simple because there was so much redundancy in the book. It took me two weeks to read this book when I finished one about 100 pages longer in about 4 days, I just found this book put me to sleep and I couldn't concentrate on it at all. Finally I didn't care much for how it was written. When speakers in a conversation changed the only way you could tell was by the apostrophes. Normally where there is a line break there was none, this confused me many times with the dialogs. This may have just been my version of the book though.

I'll be honest: this isn't a book I would have picked up myself if it hadn't been assigned, and that fact colored my whole reading experience. But honestly, it wasn't too bad for assigned reading. Wish it had chapter breaks, but at least the 254 pages moved along faster than I expected they would.

 ---------------------------SPOILER ALERT----------------------------
Although this book was a little bit slow at some parts, I enjoyed it overall. I loved Robinson's account of being on the island, although I got a little bored in the last 30 pages or so when he described his travels after leaving the island. Overall I recommend this book, especially for those who are trying to read all of the classics as I am.

A young man gets shipwrecked, all alone, on a deserted island. Though he is able to salvage quite a bit from the ship before it sinks completely, he is still left to try to survive in the wilderness without any human contact. This book is certainly marked by the time in which it was written, when ideas about slavery and philosophy were very different from our modern view. This may put off modern readers.

I remember reading this book a very long time ago. I think it was in 5th or 6th grade. Being young, I got distracted by something else and only got about a quarter of the way through, but I remember liking what I read. Back then I wanted to read it because Robinhound Crusoe was my favorite Wishbone book. Now that I'm finishing high school, I figure it's time to pursue that adventure yet again. Right after I finish Treasure Island. Robinson Crusoe is currently being ordered for me at the library.

For many people and critics, the first English novel. But anyway, is of course the perfect example of narrative in the Illustration. The way Robinson records the shipwreck, the arriving to a desert island, and more important, the way he adapts or as I see it, the way he reinvent himself and becames a new man. Either alone o with company, as a lonely survivor or as leader of a few men, his struggle fo life, his way of finding beauty, consolation and strenght from humble events and elements, proves us we can survive and begin a new life any time we want...
