On The Turn of the Screw: I hate classics. Especially ones like this that drag on and on. The main character was not easy to sympathize with, which she wasn't suppose to be, and ugh. The book was hard to read and I skipped a third of it. Unless you love classics, don't read it.

I read The Turn of the Screw, but not any of the other short novels. Awesome piece of literature.

Couldn't get past the fifth chapter, I'm sure the story is a good one but the language is hard work and kind of needs translating not just reading. Gave up I'm afraid, might try to find the talking book it might be easier to hear it...
Seriously heavy going. I'm sure it's a good story and I'd love to know it. But only made it to chapter 5. The old English uses so many words when half as many would do, makes it very hard to read. It's like translating each sentance to understand it!

Read it in Spanish first, then went through the original in English wherever there were spots of ambiguities that had made me draw questionable interpretations -the book has several little ambiguities. Both in English and Spanish, I think there is some vocabulary that makes you wonder whether this is a story of ghosts within the context of obsessed babysitting care, or a story of insanity and child abuse. I lean towards the latter interpretation. By the way, the book is fully available online:

Magnífico relato de misterio y fantasía al mejor estilo de James. Novedosa técnica de narrador "de oídas" en el que se esconde la situación sicológica de la narradora original del cuento. En él se basa la película "Los Otros".

The Turn of the Screw seemed a bit slow till the first ghost appearance. But there is not much action in the whole book. It's a piece of psychological horror by Henry James, brother of famous psychologist William James.

The book remains open to interpretation. Were the ghosts "real" or imagined? What may have been going on that is not revealed in the narrative? Read the book and let your imagination guide you. It's a quick read, and will reward you for a long time to come.

I didn't realize this was some great literary classic when I read it. I just thought it'd be a fun read for Halloween. Imagine my surprise when I found the notes in the back! So, reading this simply as a novel, I didn't think it was terribly wonderful, but I was surprised at how utterly creepy it was. Half way through the novel, however, I thought the governess was abusing the kids and teh ghosts were appearing to protect them. She, being nuts, naturally thought they were evilly abusing the kids. Turns out that wasn't the case. But, it was a good few hours spent reading that got me sufficiently in the Halloween mood.
