I read this in hebrew thinking the writer wrote in his native tongue only to find out he wrote in English!!! There are several writers like him who write in English insted of their native language.... The book is facinating! a story with ingridiants for a good book - history, philosophy, mistery, action, saddness, love, rich and poor, soldiers, pride, good-evil, mixed feelings.... Go read it!

A superbly paced and rich novel. One can feel the dampness along the Ayerwaddy and the aromas arising from Ghosh's words. Reminded me of A Hundred Years of Solitude in its expansiveness yet consistently keeping a locus on the family. I read this a couple of years ago and this summer went to Burma for a week. I will re-read this book soon.
