Another wonderful classic. Hardy, a genius in depicting human passions and emotions has given us this beautiful line which often guides me in my grief-" HAPPINESS IS BUT THE OCASSIONAL EPISODES IN THE GENERAL DRAMA OF PAIN "

The first part of this book will shock you. This is a man that sold his wife and child while he was drunk. Then couldn't find them again. But there is a reunion several years later and it gets incredibly interesting. My favorite Hardy book!

My first reading of this book was a tough one. It seemed difficult to understand the prose, especially since it felt as if I was caught up in the whirlwind of the relationships and the changes. Subsequent readings evolved the depth of the character in my understanding, particularly a single truth- that growth and status changes no one; and our heritage, our past which we so easily discard- defines our living choices.
Can we ever change the consequences of our decisions? Or do we live with them forever? What becomes us? What defines us? If we could foresee the future, would we have done what we did? These questions are answered in this book... and you realise, life is all about making and facing those decisions. Painful though they may be, still our courage is what leaves us our legacy.

Marked by a tragic beginning and a more tragic ending which can bring a feeling of sorrow and melancholy in a person, ‘The Mayor of Casterbrdge’ is a novel written by Thomas Hardy in which he tells the tragic story of a character named ‘Michael Henchard’, a haytrusser, who in the beginning of the story gets drunk and sells his wife to sailor in five guineas. When he gets to his consciousness he realizes his mistake and decides to make amends for it and becomes after a substantial continuum of hard work rich and Mayor of Casterbridge. This is the part after which the main part of the story starts. The major characters in the novel besides Henchard are his wife, his daughter Elizabeth Jane, his assistant Farfrae and Newson, the sailor.

The language of the book is classic nineteenth century English of which I am a huge fan. Thus, I found reading the novel very interesting, even though the some part of the story I think was mundane. The story is told in third person and contains a fair amount of dialogues. The usage of words was excellent and the explanation of emotions of the characters was amazing.

The story in the novel is of the kind that hooks you up until you finish the novel. That’s the major reason I liked this novel so much. This review cannot be completed without my appreciating one of the most beautiful endings I have ever read in a novel. It made me emotional as it can do to anyone who reads it.

I would recommend this novel to everyone as it is beautiful tragic story which one cannot afford to miss especially if one has read Thomas Hardy’s other works.
