Great work based upon the necessity of things in the world (and the lack, thereof). Not Hugo's best, but it still contains very powerful imagery. Although the novel mostly centers around Gilliat's isolation, I wish that the other characters were more fleshed out.

A towering work from my favorite author...most people point to Les Mis as the top of the rung for Hugo...this is my favorite. Fell in love with this man's writing because of this book...

Last part of a trilogy which includes the 'Toilers of the sea" (about power of nature), 'Les Miserable' (about social conflicts) and 'Notre Dame de Paris' (about the might of religion). A strong man in the middle of the power of nature - perhaps men's-stuff only but by my preferred writer V.Hugo. It is about the traditional connection between a man, a lady and a child and how he wins and lose all again in the fight with the natural mights. The book is one of the not so well-known works, but it hooked me so that I had to read it in one night only, from the sad beginning until the man disappears when the tide is coming higher and higher...

I read this book years ago when I was in high school. I remember how I got so hooked from the opening pages that I spent that night reading it forgetting about the exam I had the next day. Sad opening and sad ending, I was in tears by the end - typical of Hugo - but it is definitely a great book! If you have to choose one Hugo book to read this should be the one.

Perhaps Victor Hugo's best, it deals with the naked conflict between man and nature, and portrays the heroism of that conflict. Gilliat is among the most interesting of Hugo's characters (not, admitedly, on a par with Cimourdain or Javert), and the structure of the book is typically Hugo-esque: great chunks of text and description piled onto each other in a way that should not work, but bizarrely, magnificently does.
Perhaps the best of Victor Hugo's works, this one deals with the direct conflict between man and nature, and the heroism of that struggle. Gilliat is among the best drawn of Victor Hugo's characters, and the book shows his classic style of great chunks of descriptive and dramatic text welded together, but nonetheless working in harmony.
