This was the first book I read completly. I hated reading until I read an exert or this book in my English Class, and I checked the book out from my school's library. It was a really good book, the kind you ask yourself "What's going to happen next?"

A very good book, but didn't interest me very well. I'm the sort of person who likes magic and suspense and mystery, this wasn't exactly under my category of reading.

I read like 2 years ago so I don't remember that much so if what i put below is wrong sorry.this book really shows the true feelings of the average kid whose parents are divorced. As a child with divorced parents, I believe this is a great book.

Cute story of a boy writing to his role model. Shows growth of the boy over time.

I cannot think of this book without deep fondness. If you let it, this is one of those books that can change your life. It's honest and innocent all at once, and Cleary does an incredible job of capturing the mood of a boy going through a confusing time of friends and family. His only outlet is a series of letters to his favorite author. What begins as a school assignment becomes a relationship (even though we are granted only Leigh's perspective) that is personal and makes you appreciate the wonderful people that are out there. The best thing about this is watching Leigh grow as a character and learn to deal with the ups and downs of his life.

Este es un GRAN libro! Lo amoooooooooooo! Es el primer libro que lei y por eso le tengo DEMASIADO cariño a el... Lo recomiendo un 100%! No he leido mas material de esta escritora pero se que este ejemplar le quedo exelente!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To tell you the truth I hadn't read this until recently. I was bored and simply picked it up because it looked like a short, interesting read. I read it in one sitting. Beverly Cleary is very good at making sympathetic, believable characters. The story really pulls you in and the "diary perspective" was enjoyable.

This was my first introduction to epistolary novels, and I've loved just about every one I've ever read since. I can truly say that this book gripped me as a child and didn't let go. I think I read it straight through without putting it down once: the most I had ever read in one sitting at the time. I should definitely read it again, since it's been a very long time.

A wonderful kids book. It's very easy to read and the story is great. It's a great book for anyone who has felt out of place or lonely.

I love Beverly Cleary, but this book had a very serious tone for her. I liked the diary/letter format, though, it was very personal, and Leigh is such a likable protagonist.

There is no excuse for this garbage being forced down the throats of America's schoolchildren. The book is absolutely intolerable. I had to read it in 4th grade, and I'm here to tell you I derived not one modicum of enjoyment from it. I have no idea why Beverly Cleary is such a beloved children's writer, given that this book, while subpar by even her standards, bears her name.The plot of the book follows a boy named Leigh who obsessively writes to some author names Mr. Henshaw, and then develops some kind of sick schizophrenic love-hate relationship with the guy, stops writing to him, names a diary "Mr. Pretend Henshaw" (a token of his descent into madness), then starts writing to the guy again. He also eats chicken livers or something.Avoid this book.
