This book is a little dry, and a lot of the charm in Bryson's other works is missing, but the information about how so many words we take for granted and use every day came to be is fascinating.

First Bill Bryson book I ever read, and I didn't know who he was really. But loved the book.

The review in GQ magazine was accurate in describing this book as "funny, wise, learned and compulsive". It is also "tedious, pedantic and verbose". Nevertheless, it is full of amazing facts and insights into American language and culture. It's great fault is also its great strength, which is its dense and voluminous treatment of the subject. It's kind of like reading an encyclopedia for pleasure. For maximum utility, read the book with a highlighter, so that you memorialize those items that are most interesting to you.
