I love Bryson. He can be whimsical, unutterably crude, and almost pedantically educational -- usually in the same paragraph. But what comes through in this book is how much he loves Britain, and I can get behind that pretty easily. He didn't spend much time in the part of England I'm most familiar with, but this book makes me want to see more than my small, comfortable peninsula.

I love this book. I've read it about 1000 times. It's my favourite 'quiet evening' book.

I love England, so Bryson and I began on the same page. He is irreverent and honest, and this "travel" book picks up on many of my favorite aspects of England. But it is also full of info and comparisons that help expose more of England's wonder. It's a great book to enjoy.

A good chuckle book, not read any Bryson before but people do rave about him so thought I'd give it a whirl. Brought back memories of childhood trips to austerely run boarding houses in Blackpool. I think England has lost much of the 'character' reminisced (is that a word?) about in this book which is probably a sad loss to the world of observational comedy.

Wryly observed in true Bill Bryson style. His description of the typical English seaside hospitality had me in stitches.

very funny look at the oddities of life in the UK. Some bits made me laugh out loud but then I love Bryson's wit & style.
Seriously funny - could not help laughing aloud when I read this which is embaressing on the underground! Bryson at his best,

I love, love, love Bill Bryson. Reading his books is like listening to a friend tell you stories about their travels--humorous, informative, entertaining.
