Eh. I liked "The Terror" more and there wasn't much to add to the characters. I never got a sense of urgency or, as they like to call it, suspense. Wasn't attached to any of the characters, which is a surprise since I'm usually so enthused by eccentricities and Darwin has it by the truckload.

It started off good and interesting and exciting, but then just kind of dwindled off. All the military and mathematical talk was a serious snorefest, and the way Darwin and Syd's relationship finally develops is just totally anti-climatic and disappointing.

I tried really hard to like this book, but the weak plot, almost shamless shoe-horning of tired urban legends and predictable plot development left me with little to enjoy. Damn you Unshelved book club! This book sucked!

Poor attempt at a crime? mystery? novel with little crime and precious little mystery. Largely a continuing stream of hackneyed old urban legends and Darwin Awards recycled from the internet. Protagonist is apparently a superman, plot is predictable, characters are flat, and I had forgotten the sheer volume of obsessive detail Simmons puts in. Sigh. I've learned my lesson. Having said all that, it's an idle pageturner of sorts. Don't expect a gripping well crafted tale, but it's not bad for passing a few bored hours.
