Shakespeare, Greek mythology, aliens, and robots. Wow. Not thrown together all slapdash but woven in by an author who's clearly not afraid to do his research. I would've given it five stars but the last hundred pages or so seemed rushed to me, and I don't think just because I was rushing through them. Hopefully the second book will resolve some remaining issues. I especially like how punchy his many chapter endings are. The story is still more plot-driven than character-driver, especially toward the end, but the characterization is still pretty good considering the genre. At least he didn't make all his female characters the same like one sci-fi writer we all know (*cough*jab*Heinlein).

This book was fantastic, if a little weird. Simmons sure has a way of creating a unique universe where you can really feel for the characters. Ilium is a great start to this 2-part series and is definitely worth a read.
