I've always believed John Crowley is a great writer, but not a great storyteller. Possibly because in this book the story is so slight he gets away with it.As usual the fantastical elements only exist if you want them to, and in this story that works. Overall one of his more enjoyable works, where the literary style does not interfere with the story he is trying to tell.

Lovely poetry, interesting plot, but the prose was sometimes overblown in a slightly 'teenage drama queen' way. Needed a lighter touch.

this book is rich an delicious. Poetry is lived and the characters talk as to how the poem lives in thier present lives, but alos the presence behind the poem. the russsian poet, has a wonderful otherness which i suppose is his russion view of the world. i have come to love hearing a russians view. i loved the character in Belle Canto as well, and in a freind with russion heritage. ultimately, the book talks of the way we must translate, fomr other languages, and other places in life. i love this book
