The finest book on women and their relationships with mommy dear and men I have come to read. Would recommend it to EVERYONE who's remotely wondering why women are the way they are! I loved and hated the stuff Nancy Friday had to say but the message in this book is strong, inspirational and daring. Enjoy!

I would recommend this to every woman. Everything in it is relevant and deeply insightful. Examines the myth of perfect motherhood and perfect daughterhood. Asks why questionning your relationship with your mother is considered so taboo when we are allowed to question every other social relationship we are a part of. The most important message I will take away is the importance of both women keeping their sense of womanhood, parallel to their sense of being a mother and/ or a daughter. That the 'perfect mother' myth is a very dangerous element in our society and the reason behind so much guilt and anger - emotions oft-linked to women and yet ways of dealing and working with such emotions are not revealed to the baby girl. It leads the way to authentic love between mother and daughter - and thus authentic love between the daughter and those she goes on to have relationships with - and indeed give birth to. Beautiful. Do not look at this as a book for those with 'mother issues' it's a work of feminist writing that uses the mother-daughter relationship as a springboard.

Finally finished reading the second half! I will definitely go back and read this again - there's so much in it that perhaps I wasn't "ready" for the first time. This book really helped me explore my feelings regarding my childhood and why I still struggle today. I highly recommend it for any woman.
Okay I only read half of it, but it was great. I am definitely planning to read the other half some day!

Guess I know why I'm stuck at a girl's school and why I'm WILLING to get stuck forever as 'the identification figure' - I WAS MY STUDENTS!

'An extremely important kind of identification figure is someone who can relieve the girl o this guilt, of her mother's introjected superego. This new figure can allow the daughter to develop a better opinion of herself. The girl can recognize there is more than one set of standards in the world that she can opt for. If someone you admire lets you feel you don't have to be all that perfect for her to like you, it's very satisfying, very relaxing. There are usually many people around for an adolescent to identify with, and they can fulfill many different functions. A healthy person will tend to pick out the best available model in her environment. If a girl with a mother who doesn't want to let her go finds a strong role model - a teacher, for instance, the new figure can give her insight into why mother didn't want her to grow up. You might find out what your rights are as a human being, rights which you may have been afraid to exercise until you saw the model of someone else to whom these freedoms were as matter-of-fact as air.' -- P. 233 & 234 Nancy Drew's "My Mother My Self".
