I liked this collection of shorts much better than "God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian".

As other reviewers said, and as with almost every collection of short stories, there are some which are good, and some which are so-so.

My favourites are: ~

- "Who Am I", about a brilliant actor of a man who by nature has the personality of a blank page. So the woman who fell in love with him managed to snag him by reading with him romantic play after play so he takes on the different male leads and stays in constant passionate love with her different female leads.

- "All the King's Horses", just for its morbidity about accidental political hostages made to play "real life chess", with themselves as pieces (dragged off to be killed when taken over by a man-sized wooden piece of the opponent) and the unwilling chessplayer himself as the King piece. Almost predictably, the "King" eventually realised he had to sacrifice one of his real-life sons (how convenient that he had two sons) in order to win the chess game and save the lives of whoever's left on the "board".

- "Epicac", my absolute favourite of all the stories, though I'm not really sure why, since it reads like a typical machine-has-a-poet's-soul kind of story. What's puzzling me is why I find the sound of the name "Epicac" so familiar. Anyway, this is the one story that roused in me a little more emotion than the others. But then, I've always had a soft spot for non-human souls, such as animals and sci-fi AI.

Meanwhile, I really wish I could master the Barnhouse effect and also be amphibious.

There are several stories in this book that remind me A LOT of what is happening in our country today.

Was a book of short stories. Being written in the 60s and 70s mostly, the stories are kinda funny looking back at them. Kurt writes about the future as seen in the 60s or 70s and it didn't really turn out as he thought. In one story he predicted all the presidents of the USA are Kennedys - kinda funny. Some stories were good and some were bad. Will probably read one of his full length books eventually.

Just as good the second time. Or the third. I have no idea how many times I've read this. Vonnegut is inventive enough that without a few months, you've forgotten all the deft twists in his stories.
