Another great satire from the genius that is Vonnegut. One of his better works. It starts out slow, then picks up like a steam engine at about its midpoint. It was clever, very funny, and had a satisfying ending (something that Vonnegut books can sometimes lack)

Another short, sharp and sweet Vonnegut book. Rambles on, but that's part of its charm. Recommended.

Luck. Philosophy. The joke of the 'Harvard man', and the leg-up of the elitist club. Riffing on Nixon, Watergate, and Jesus.

New York. Anti-capitalism, pro-capitalism. Fear. Subway, murder, living on peanut butter and paranoia. Young love that persists beyond reason, hinges on simple kindness where no kindness was. The accident of interpreting compassion where no compassion was. The single right act of the anti-hero.

The philosophy of prison and freedom; of the notorious criminal 'who behaved unselfishly at the end'.

The American dream as naivete: "I still believe that peace and plenty and happiness can be worked out some way. I am a fool."

The necessity of faith.

The regret of the complacent man; the coward.

"The most embarrassing thing to me about this autobiogrphy, surely, is its unbroken chain of proofs that I was never a serious man. I have been in a lot of trouble over the years, but that was all accidental. Never have I risked my life, or even my comfort, in the service of mankind. Shame on me."

The bleak irrelevancy of life in a world born of accident:
"We are here for no purpose, unless we can invent one. Of that I am sure. The human condition in an exploding universe would not have been altered one iota if, rather than live as I have, I had done nothing but carry a rubber ice-cream cone from closet to closet for sixty years."

But it's damn funny. And it messes with your thinking, and with history, and our world. Classic Vonnegut.

To today's cynical pallete, this book will probably seem trite, but taken in context, this book is a moral argument for the abolition of private schools and political parties. Vive l'anarchie!

Not the most memorable Vonnegut (Breakfast of Champions, Cat's Cradle get the honors from me) but a good satirical look at beauracracy and wheel of fortune.

I remember one passage in particular, and the line that followed it. I won't ruin the surprise, but that passage and that line earned an extra 1/2 star.
