Not the most memorable Vonnegut (Breakfast of Champions, Cat's Cradle get the honors from me) but a good satirical look at beauracracy and wheel of fortune.

I remember one passage in particular, and the line that followed it. I won't ruin the surprise, but that passage and that line earned an extra 1/2 star.

At the beginning of this book I was only mildly interested and thought it would be really depressing and I got this really masculine feel to his writing that I don't know how to describe with another adjective. The book picked up though, and had some crazy pahlaniuk twists in it (yes i know vonnegut came way before pahlanuk but i only just started reading vonnegut)and lots of really thoughtful lines that will really stick with me. He gets you thinking but doesn't really provide all the answers. The jokes were pretty awesome, too. It's a very reflective book as the main character is old and realizing his life didn't turn out like he wanted or expected. I am left thinking that one person can't change the world perhaps, but it is noble to try.

My father gave me this book for my 15th birthday. I loved it then, and I'm sure you will love it too. The world lost a great man in Kurt Vonnegut. He understood the banality of cruelty and the absurdity of reason, yet somehow he bridged that ugly truth to tell us more about ourselves than we ever really knew. His books made the world a better place to live in. What more can you ask of a novelist?

You really have to feel bad for Starbuck. But the plot is interesting because it somehow encapsulates a theme that is rampant in all of Vonnegut's books. A lonely departure.... that's smiling.

The book was good, but not as lasting an impression as most of Kurt's novels.
