This book was largely boring. Not much happened, there seemed to be a lack of a main character for the first half, and Grisham's criticism and attack on the tobacco industry is sophomoric and poorly thought out. Grisham's books seem to be going downhill since The Firm, as well.

John Grisham jumped the shark with his unbelievable plot in THE RUNAWAY JURY. The only runaway jury I saw was when the O.J. Simpson jury declared they would not sit one day, and Judge Ito indulged them instead of instantly ordering them in or declaring a mistrial. THE RUNAWAY JURY was made into an equally unbelievable and judgmental movie starring John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman.

Not among Grisham's best books, the Runaway Jury gets bogged down in details about the tobacco industry. The ending is pretty worthwhile, however.

Well every kid now know's smoking is injurious to health... but who is to be blamed for that "smoker or tobacco companies???"...well if you haven't asked yourself this question you would probably be asking this to yourself after reading this novel..I liked the plot and the issue it dealt with--lawsuits/torts on tobacco companies and corruption/politics involved in the trial to swing verdict in one's favor...A typical John Grisham work ...story binds you from cover to cover..

People call this a suspense thriller, but I have no idea why. People also call Bin Laden a freedom fighter, again I don't know why. The plot was certainly unique, but it dragged and dragged. I normally read every book start to finish before starting another. It wasn't the case this time around. Three other books were started and finished before this one. Maybe I'm just not a Grisham fan. Funny though, I thought I was.

One of the reviews for this book said 'This book is a sheer joy...One of those books you regret having finished it' How apt is this statement. Wonderfully crafted book. From court room events to off the court events, this book will surely leave u breathless. A rivetting suspense and a climax so thrilling it gave me goose pimples...A classic from the pen of Grisham!

The Runaway Jury is marked as suspense, but I didn’t think there was much suspenseful about it. Nicholas Easter is selected as a juror in a tobacco trial. He’s a friendly guy with two years of law school behind him and all the jurors respect him and sometimes even look to him to explain what’s going on.Inside the courtroom, the plaintiff is trying to prove that a man died directly from cigarette smoking. They throw in all sorts of obscure facts about advertising and targetting kids. Things that are supposed to make the jury hate cigarettes, but these things have nothing to do with the case. The defense, in my opinion, is very weak in this case. But the book isn’t really about the trial, it’s about the jury and what goes on behind the scenes. I’m really afraid to serve on a jury for a large trial now. Both the defense and plaintiff trail all prospective jurors and gather as much dirt on them as they can. Once jury selection is complete, the defense goes to work on influencing each of the jurors. Sometimes they use their spouses to get to them. Sometimes they do so directly with a dirty little secret.Rankin Fitch works for the big tobacco companies and is, in effect, running this operation. He is very perceptive and can probably tell you your life history just by looking at you. Fitch starts getting notes and phone calls from a woman named Marlee and it doesn’t take long before Fitch realizes that Marlee knows exactly what’s going on and Nicholas Easter is working with her somehow to control the jury. The question is, what does Marlee want, why is she doing this? Both her and Nicholas seem to have appeared out of thin air and Fitch must track them down and learn their dirty little secrets in order to get the upper hand. Will he be too late?

A very suspenseful courtroom thriller. Not my usual choice of reading material, but no access to anything but your mother's book collection will do that to you. Ahaha. Anyway, this made me a bit afraid to serve on a jury. I haven't done enough research into the legal system to test the validity of what goes on "behind the scenes" in a trial, but I have a suspicion this book DOES in fact have some truth to it. The prosecutor and defense both use scare tactics and manipulate the jury into arriving at the conclusion each side desires. Definitely made me question our court system.

This intriguing story is about a trial between the complaintant and a tobacco company. As you progress in the story you get to know each juror, the Board Members of the tobacco companies, and witnesses. With twists, plots and fast-paced excitment the reader will weave your way in the events of the jury. What is the verdict? What is the motivation? Keep reading to the very end and then find out what and why. In the process try to work it out.

Excellent suspense, I remember seeing the film starring John Cuzack I think.
It makes you hope it doesn't work this way for the sake of justice.

I decided to give this book a try, since people are always raving about Grisham and his court room dramas. I found it mildly enjoyable, although a tad predictable and a bit redundant at times. I felt like it dragged on for much to long, and could easily have been trimmed down a few hundred pages and still keep the same story. The characters were well-developed for the most part; there were a few who quietly faded into the background, only to re-appear occasionally as though to remind the reader they still existed. Because it was written in the 90s, some of the cultural references were dated and unaffective. For the most part, I can understand why people enjoy his novels so much; they're light and breezy, and have just enough plot twists for the average reader to stay involved. Perhaps I will dive into another Grisham story soon, but not at the moment. 3.5/5
