Very nice story, a real humanist story set in a bleak time period. Read it!

I really "enjoyed" this book. The archivist lives a half-life in Stalinist USSR - his job is to guard and catalog the hundreds of items taken "as evidence" from the writers arrested by Stalin - a lover of literature, he recognizes the value of what he is guarding, all of which is destined for the furnace in the cellar. He hates his job, but is trapped - one day he decides to take action, a small action, but one with serious repercussions. In this world, you can trust no-one - the story shines a light into the relationships one has in a society where you cannot confide in anyone, as to do so might put them in danger....yet tenderness, love, and the love of art, and freedom, survive. Believable characters. An important novel dealing with censorship.

Set in 1930s Soviet Union, you'll get a lot of history from that period. The author does a great job of putting you in that time. The story is captivating and everyone can relate to the themes of loss, and responsibilty to ourselves and to others.

Not typically what I read, but I continued with it anyway; historical fiction in a spare and thoughtful prose with a very open ending.

Interesting story. Well written, sparse prose. Unrelentingly depressing.
