Awesome story about the trials and tribulations dark-skinned women go through in their youth! Loved it... and after you read it I will tell you a secret few people know about the book.

Musical, haunting dialogue and voice. Straight's best work. The story of a Gullah girl as she grows to womanhood and her life as a mother of twin boys, of her commitment to retaining her quiet dignity and self-sufficiency in the face of great personal loss and the racism of the South in the 1960's. Marietta is a character of reaching across the boundaries of cultures, authentic and memorable. An exceptional novel.
