Margaret Atwood is an outstanding writer. Her style somewhere between the sparse American and the English understated literary styles drags the reader effortlessly through the landscapes, physical and psychological, that she creates. It is infuriating that she so often refuses the label of science fiction for her work - maybe she doesn't want to be stuck with a label, but it is both ridiculous (this book is set in a future where humanity is destroyed by a bio-engineered plague and replaced by specially created neo-human) and insulting to the writers who have blazed the trail before and in whose wake she follows. It's like Johnny Rotten saying the Pistols were completely original and had no antecedents. This is especially true with a book like Oryx and Crake which, while superbly written, is hardly original. It is heavily reminiscent of JG Ballard and especially Brian Aldiss, and even the SF roleplaying games based in apocalyptic settings such as Aftermath and Gamma World. And anyone who argues that this is different because it is 'literature' rather than 'genre fiction', with the staggering pomposity inherent in that statement, should go away and read Aldiss and Ballard, Gibson and Stephenson, le Guin and Ryman, Mieville and Grimwood.

Well written as usual from Atwood. Difficult to get into but once in, becomes a strange and interesting tale of the possible horrors of genetic engineering and 'pharming'. A bit sci fi but worth a look, especially if u have a interest in biotechnology.

Blunt, dark, and compelling, Atwood's vision of the future, in which the world is divided into 'Compounds' competing for people's money in the genetic engineering market is disturbing. The end result is a world in which we are removed from 'the human condition' via complete engineering, the narrator being the only human left in the world.

Wonderful book about bio-tech gone mad. Dark but humorous. This book, and the Handmaid's Tale, are my favorite books by Atwood about futures that could be. It's also a great book-on-tape.

I love Margaret Atwood. Oryx and Crake is a sometimes very darkly funny post-apocolyptic tale, dealing with some issues of class and the ethics of genetic manipulation. Thought provoking, suspenseful, well-written.

Really enjoyed this book. Brilliantly written, set in the future, I love the way she sucks you into a future world. Told from the perspective of a man recollecting his life journey so the story unfolds within his mind, I found this style of story telling compelling. Also Set in the future in a time where technology and genetic experimentation has completely evolved and gone a bit wierd and crazy. It also has a humerous edge to it, for instance the wierd plant thing that grows chicken breasts. The book is multi-layered with the main characters and main story line set amidst a futuristic world where genetics and technology have gone awry at price of ethics.
