Gives a lot of background, has an exciting plot and subplots but the characters seem flat and often their conversations seem contrived to bring in the history of the Land of Marvels.

Not as good as Sacred Hunger but better than Morality Play and had the benefit of being fairly short.

Fascinating thriller set just before WWI in Mesopotamia...just as oil was discovered and the Germans were building a railroad to Bagdad. No "Sacred Hunger," (Unsworth's Booker Prize winner, but a good read. Would make a great movie.

A nicely balanced view of the economic and cultural events taking place in pre WW1 Mesopotamia, aka Middle East, aka late Ottoman, aka late European colonialism, now known as Iraq! Three "empires" (British, German and Turkish) face off against each other in subtle dance where the ultimate prize is oil, wealth and militaristic control. Unbeknown to them all they are being outmanouvred by a fast upcoming economic power; the USA. Each empire is represented in this drama by strong characters, who work for the "best" interests of their country. Whilst this is being played, an english archeologist, nobly tries to find the remnants of a long lost civilisation. Ultimately the loss of all evidence of this ancient civilisation comes to symbolise the ultimate loss of control of the areas "fabulous" riches by the principal players, to the US interests.
Beautifully crafted and told
