Good read, although it will take a while. The book follows fictional families through the history of New York from the 1600s through 2001. While most of the characters are fictional, the history intertwined with the story is real and interesting.

If you like historic fiction. If you ever lived in the Big Apple. This one comes highly recommended with great character studies from the 1600's through 2005. Timely, astute and interesting plot. Follow the wampum belt to it's amazing end.

Sometimes the author jumped huge periods of time that I would have liked to know about in more detail such as WW1, the depression and WW2. Otherwise it was an excellent book and very educational.

Very well written and researched, it follows some families from their immigration to 2009; from when New York was New Amsterdam to after the fall of the Twin Towers. While some of the dialogue is a little facile, generally each person becomes unique and distinct from his/her parents or ancestors.

I especially enjoyed Edward Rutherfurd's "London" and fully expected to enjoy "New York" just as much. Well, not so much...perhaps it was because I was more familiar with the history, but it just slogged along. Too, too much detail about the Revolution and when storylines included a character working at the ShirtWaist Factory in NYC...well, we knew what was coming. I did enjoy the characters and felt they were multi-faceted, but the prose needed to set up the historical context was more than I bargained for. Only for true, historical fiction enthusiasts...with the emphasis on historical.

I really enjoy reading Edward Rutherfurd's books. New York was an exciting read the whole way through. I was a bit disappointed that he didn't discuss more of the Depression as a part of the history of the city. It was only vaguely mentioned. Also thought that the 1980s could have been discussed more, as there was considerable financial growth during this time. Overall, a wonderful read. :)

I love historical fiction and I love New York City, so this book promised to be a great read for me. I was a little disappointed in the writing style. I felt it was lacking in color. I liked how it followed one family through the ages, with other smaller story arcs following various families representative of the diverse cultures that came to settle in NYC.

I really enjoy epic novels, and this was a really good one! I'm so glad I own the book because I'll probably go back and read it again in the future, and that's something I never do. The book follows several different families through the centuries as New York evolves from the time of the Dutch colonies through to what it is today, including such historic milestones as the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Great Depression and the 9/11 attacks. I had a hard time putting it down. Don't let the number of pages intimidate you!

Still reading it, but it's so thought provoking I wanted to write something now. Terrorists, war, economic upset...it's been going on since the founding of this nation (and before that elsewhere). Uprisings in the late 1700's from the "Patriots" resulted in tar and feathering, gangs roaming the streets terrorizing "loyalists." War was a constant between England, France, Spain (and then the colonists). Economic differences (poverty vs huge wealth) is nothing new. It seems that this novel was written with today's headlines in mind, to remind us that it all really doesn't matter (e.g. hand wringing) compared to how WE choose to live our own lives.

Cute, but forced, conceit follows several families across the generations. I won't "spoil" the end, but it was too obvious.

Wow, my favorite Rutherford book so far. Unlike Sarum or London, the history of New York is actually only 400 years old, so it seems a much easier read. It takes us all the way through to today, covering 9/11 also. I really enjoyed his characters and learning things about historical events I didn't know, like about the draft riots in New York during the Civil War. A great read for Christmas vacation. Two thumbs up!

Rutherfurd's "histories" of Russia, London, Sarum, the New Forest and Ireland (2 vols) have kept me immersed for hours. I love sinking into his plots and keeping company with the family. NEW YORK is no exception; like all the others, it is more fun to read if you know the area but he makes his characters so realistic as they interact with real historical figures, everyone "comes alive." I have read several histories of the Big Apple; Rutherfurd still manages to tuck in some new nuggets and anecdotes among the old chestnuts. He is a worthy successor to Michener, excellent story-tellers both.

I was surprised that no one went down on the Titanic. WW1 and 2 were zipped through and there were only minimal casualties to the featured characters on 9/11 considering how many of them were in the World Trade Centre at the time.

Great beginning - fair middle - good ending. This was long on history in the beginning but tended to be short and abrupt as it progressed. The ending picked up but by far it was more interesting in the beginning.
