23 non-fiction essays from one of the most interesting and surprising novelists out there today. Good insight on some of the nuggets of inspiration he gets for his books.

If you are a fan of palahniuk's dark twists this is not for you. If you want his descriptive and sometimes perverse perspective, this may work for you.

I was really taken aback by this book. I've enjoyed most every Palahniuk book I've read, well three of four, but always considered him to be a bit of a one trick pony... until reading this.
The book kicks off on a high note with one of the better introductions I think I have ever read. He discusses his idea of characters in a story and it's a fascinating take. I never thought about any research in his novels but found him discussing volunteer work and attending Anon groups and what he took from them. So right away I had high hopes.
Then the book trips up with the worst essay of the entire compilation, mostly because it reinforces his stereotype of a sex crazed author and nothing more. Once you finish the book you see how out of place the first essay is. It feels forced. Like a publisher somewhere said you have to have a story about sex because you are Chuck Palahniuk. But it gets better from there.
Palahniuk displays a breadth that I had no clue he had. He touches on many interesting people and events from castle builders to Juliet Lewis. From ghosts to wheat thresher demolition derbies.
The best he saves for last. The final section is all personal pieces, revealing truths about himself and his experiences as a writer.
It was good enough that I went out and bought another of his novels almost immediately, it will be the first i've read in a few years. I'm looking forward to it.

This was fantastic, and slightly repetitive at times, as Palahniuk did refer to events continuously. However, the thorough novelty of many of these essays and stories compensates for this. Palahniuk has experienced and seen things most only have fantasies or nightmares about. His writing is refreshing and often blunt. One essay, the one on writing for memory's sake, I think, was what I consider to be his most emotional and one of his most powerful pieces in this collection.
