Not since ROOTS have I been so engrossed in the African slave story. I couldn't put the book down. Lawrence Hill did the story historical justice too, with tribute to William Wilberforce. A great read!
Good-old deeprooted American ignorance made them change this from the orginal Canadian title "The Book of Negroes". Lawrence Hill was at our school for his book presentation, and he is an inspiration to all. Can't wait to read it!

Engrossing and inspiring despite being slightly fantastical at times. I am going to miss my time with Aminata...

Lawrence Hill weaves an intriguing fictional novel that perfectly parallels its historical backdrop. He gives a voice to Aminata that rises from the pages engaging the reader as only a true djeli (storyteller) can. This goes on my favorites shelf nestled with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and To Kill A Mockingbird.

This book was so amazing; the fact that it was written by a man thru the eyes of this woman was fascinating. The essence of this book stays with me forever I am sure. What a story and an impact it made on me. Hope you will feel the same as I highly recommend this book.

This was a fantastic read about the journey of Aminato Diallo during the African diaspora. Though it is a work of historical fiction, the characters seem absolutely real. Lawrence Hill did an excellent job of uncovering the sweetness and brutality of the human experience as the story unfolded. This story will be long remembered~

One of the most moving books I've ever read. Aminata Diallo is an inspirational woman, surviving the horrors of being stolen from her home in Africa & sold into slavery in South Carolina, having her husband and children taken from her, and being tricked and manipulated by white men all along the way. No one can keep her down though and she is determined to tell her story to anyone who will listen so that she can help put an end to slavery once and for all.

 I liked this book, but...

I was prepared to love this book. I'd read so many great reviews of it and I picked it up with great anticipation for the great read I was about to enjoy. Unfortunately, I think I might've been generous by giving it 3 stars. and, frankly, the only reason I gave this book 3 stars instead of 2 was because I loved the first 1/3-1/2 of this books so much. The rest of the book was truly disappointing.

The first part of the book was really well done and truly believable. If the book had stopped at the half-way point, I likely would've rated it 4-5 stars. I found the story of Aminata and her kidnapping from her home in Africa truly compelling and heartbreaking. Mostly I found it thoroughly believable. My heart ached for her many losses and I totally "bought" the entire story of her travels from Africa to South Carolina, her sale into slavery and her pain and suffering. And then the author took a swift right turn and Aminata began the most fantastic journey and the author entirely lost my "belief."

SPOILER ALERT:

There were so many parts of this book that were so completely improbable that the author lost me. First, even if I bought the idea that Aminata learned to read, I simply could not believe the many miraculous events that transpired in her life. First that she lost and found her husband no fewer than three times, that she discovered the details of the sale of her son, that she was saved at the last minute by her owner who "freed" her at the most convenient moment, that she was always in the right place at the right time to have such fantastic travels, that she even had the opportunity to make it back to her homeland...I could go on and on.

Again, I loved the first part of this book up until she was sold to the Jewish Lindo. Pretty much everything after that totally lost me because the story was too incredible to be believable.

I was interested in the history. I did not know about the slaves settling in Canada or about the indigo trade for example. I have read slave narratives so the fictional accounts will always lack something for me but that said this is a well researched , carefully written book. Had it been written by a woman it would have had more for the want of a better word, 'soul'. We would have felt the pain for example of the narrator losing her family. She is somewhat detached from the full emotional abyss. Perhaps this was intentional?

I am going out to a book club discussion on this one now. It is a fascinating read-the type of historical fiction that will not easily be put down and once read it will stay with you forever. I highly recommend this novel about the journeys of one slave woman from her childhood in an African village to her final days in London. You will find yourself time traveling through the voyage to the antebellum south, to loyalist Nova Scotia, back to Liberia and on to London. Astonishing in its scope and mesmerizing in its style

The only downside to this book is that it eventually had to end.
This gripping, informational, inspiring piece of historical fiction taught me more about the slave trade than any textbook ever could. The author has mastered the delicate balance of detailing shockingly offensive human behavior without making the story itself too offensive to read.

Very interesting book detailing the life of an African during the slave trade. It makes you wonder what people were thinking and how slave trade even started. It's very sad book with a realtively happy ending. It's interesting that it's from a male author depicting the life of a young girl being abducted from her family.

This is an amazing (that seems SO much like a true story, it's hard to believe it's fiction. It is based on fact, however) and powerful story about a young African girl being taken captive and sold as a slave. From her home in Africa, she travels across the ocean, among many other shackled slaves and prisoners, some of whom die along the way. She has an incredible journey through southern America and up into Nova Scotia. Through her life, she's determined to get back home to Africa, to the town she was taken from and where she witnessed her parents being brutally murdered. This is a very gripping story, kept me reading into the long hours of the night. I definitely recommend it!
This book is SO good! I don't think it's a true story, but it damn well could be. It's about an African "free-born" who is kidnapped and her parents are killed, and taken to America to be a slave. It's amazing! :) I love it! It's taken me the longest I've ever had to read a book, but it's one of the greatest reads. read it!

Fantastic look at a woman's journey as slave from Africa to US to Nova Scotia and back to Africa then telling her story in London, around the time of our Revolutionary War. Beautiful, honest, sad.
