I really liked the movie, which I saw first, but I REALLY liked this book! So much more detail about the football side of things, and the history behind it! I loved Michael Oher's story, but I also loved reading about how Bill Walsh and the Niners figured into it, as well as L.T. and the Giants, Steve Wallace, and Jonathan Ogden. Good read!

This is a great book to read if you want to know a few more details about Michael Oher. The book is about 75% football details, so be prepared to learn alot about people and positions on the field.

What information is written about Michael's life, does help to fill in the questions one might have, that we didn't get from the movie.

Overall, a great addition to the movie.

The story is what you expect, but perhaps with more comic anecdotes; however, the story is probably less than 100 pages if extracted and the book is over 300. It is a book about the development of the NFL and American football, and while I learned a lot about that, I wasn't particularly interested.

Also, I want a sequel.

I wasn't interested in this book until I saw the movie, which I thought was great. There are parts of this book, about Michael Oher's past family life and his developing relationship with the Tuohys, that were both heartbreaking and inspirational, making this hard to put down. However, there were other parts that droned on and on like a football manual, and I found myself just skimming over 10 or 12 pages at a time. For someone who enjoys football, that wouldn't be an issue. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Not that great. Way too much football history/technical game strategies, etc.

This is a good book - but I did not find it nearly as engaging as Moneyball (but then I like baseball more than football). I also think this is the rare case where a movie exceeds its original source. Worth the read.

This was a good book, but be warned: If you are not a fan of American football, there will be parts that are hard to get through. Michael Lewis is clearly a sports writer, and while there is nothing in the world wrong with that, it typically is not my cup of tea. But the story is a good one and I managed to learn a little about the game as well.

If you like watching football, you'll like this book. I learned so much about the game, strategy, and business of football without it being textbook boring; that is one of Michael Lewis' strengths as a writer. To keep the reading on the lighter side, he intertwines this great story, that I'm sure you've all heard about by now with the success of the movie. There are some awkwardly structured sentences scattered throughout the book that made me pause, but overall it is was a page turner.

Even though there are football terminology and certain facts in between, it doesn't overwhelm the main focus of the story which is regarding Michael Oher. Growing up in a tough environment with a mother that was addicted to crack, he had it quite difficult until a rich white family decided to take him in. It comes to show that if people can look past the racial issues and more on trying to understand the person, despite difficulties, whether mental or physical, that there isn't much difference in terms of family. The main focus is on how the love from a family can change and in Michael's case, redeem a person that started from nothing into become someone different than what he/she was before.

Rich white southern woman rescues poor black boy, turns him into a rich boy, digs his personal secrets out of him and publishes them for all the world to read, pulls strings to get him to play football for her alma mater, and in the end the author (third person) never even thanks Michael Oher for the use of his life story.
If you like love with a lot of strings attached, this is the book for you. She did him a lot of good in that he has an education and a livelihood, but you wonder what he's thinking inside.

This book was AWESOME!!!! I have been told by a few people that it would be a tough read, meaning if you are not a football fan, you won't enjoy the entire thing. I didn't find that at all. In the beginning it was almost like every other chapter was about football's evolution and alot of stats. It didn't bother me...as a matter of fact, being a relatively new football fan, I found alot of it interesting. But if you are looking for just the story about Michael Oher, you can easily skip those entire chapters and not miss anything about his amazing journey! Kudos to the family for taking him in and giving him the opportunity to make something of himself!!!

After seeing the movie I wanted to know more about the characters and events. I wanted more details. Michael Lewis is a talented author and I will explore his other offerings. I trend to non-fiction because I hope to lean something and this book did not disappoint, it was filled with factual information on football, Memphis, the family that took this young man in, the Christian School that gave him an opportunity and the tenacity of this young man.

This book brought back good and bad memories of growing up in Memphis. Busing beginning in Memphis in 1971 when I went to Memphis Central that triggered the founding of Briarcrest. All of the public high schools I played against like East & Westwood and local college rivalries between Alabama, Ole Miss and Tennessee.
It was fun reading about Evangelical Christian School at my home church First Evangelical, where Duane Litfin became pastor in 1984.
My favorite quote: “It was like God made a child just for us,” said Sean, “Sports for me, neat for Leigh Anne.”

Read this a year before the movie came out. Took it home for X-mas and most of my family loved it.
IMO the book was vastly more enjoyable. The movie focused on the minutiae of the family's faith and love, the book balanced that with the stats of how an entire sports institution came to accurately value the left tackle position. This deserves whatever the book equivalent of an oscar is.

Don't let the fear of a Feel good story stear you away from this book, it is way more then that. Of course you may want to know a bit about football or want to know about it.
A VERY well written book. I had already seen the movei and thought the book would be much the same...Not really. The background story of Michael Ohr was well written and not much fdiffernt then portrayed in the movie...but the evolution of football particularly the left tackle position was extremely interesting ...Very impressed overall

Once again Lewis does a good job digging into a subject or series of subjects and then telling a story that brings those subjects together in an informative and entertaining fashion.

Beyond a story and entertainment, Lewis tackles a lot of problems. It is definitely a book to learn from. It challenges a lot of thinking - liberal and conservative both - about the plight of the poor.

It is worth the read.

Great Story! The book has a lot more details about football and how important the left tackle position became. A lot of great information about the Giants and Lawrence Taylor and some of the greatest quarterbacks facing off to LT. If you love football, you will love this book! Now I can't wait to see the movie!

I saw the movie first but don't regret reading the book last. I'm afraid if I had done it backwards I wouldn't have liked the movie so much.
I love to watch football, but never really paid attention to every player on the field. Reading this book has forever changed the way I watch the game for I'm always searching for what is happening on the quarterback's blind side.

I love football. I really do. I just can't get into reading about it. This book is filled with lots of football history stats and figures and I just couldn't plow through it. I had a tendency to skim through those chapters and move on to the story about the family. It has taken me a long time to get through the book; (I'm still not done.) and I keep picking up all of the other books I've begun. I WILL finish it, because I want to watch the movie. The story behind the football stats is very good and heartwarming.

I flipped open this book before I bought it, and I could tell that the story was much different than what the movie portrayed, so I bought it. I'm pretty impressed by how Michael Lewis managed to make football theory interesting because I had very little interest in that particular part of the story at first. He spent a lot of time making sure the reader understood the evolution of the position that Michael Oher would be playing. I'm not sure that it was completely necessary, but as it turns out, it held my attention almost as well as the story of Michael himself. This was a story that needed to be told, and I'd love to read more about the Tuohy family and how they are continuing to work in the lives of those in their reach.
