This was an interesting read. It reminded me of a very watered down Count of Monte Cristo. The end was a bit too depressing for as interesting as the story was. The characters are developed to the point where I would like to find de Balzac's other stories in his La Comedie humaine to see what becomes of some of the characters (specifically Madamede Beauseant in La Femme abandonnee).

Sad, poignant. The setting is a couple of centuries old, but the emotions all too real.

Difficult, but historically captivating. Will also raise your French to the next level, since Balzacs French is nothing less than legendary. Latin skills help in understanding.

The best introduction to Balzac. If you only ever read one in his Comedie Humane series, this has to be it.
