This woman knows how to write a scary story.Wow. Diabolical, intricate, beautiful. I think very few Westerners delve as deeply into Japanese literature as they should. We miss so much! Most of the works I have read reflect the same precision and simple, stark beauty of all Japanese art. Think of a Hokusai print, or a No drama, or the clean lines of a bonsai tree. The literature is as elegant. If you like this, also check out Yasunari Kawabata ("Snow Country") and Natsume Soseki ("Kokoro").

An eerie story that can be appreciated on different levels depending on the readers background knowledge of traditional Japanese theatre and 'The Tale of Genji'. I have no knowledge of either but the book still entertained with it's dramatic plot and poetic writing style. The descriptions of Noh masks and analysis of 'The Tale of Genji' built into the story allowed me to appreciate just how deep these elements of Japanese cultural history are. Worth a read for any Japanese culture enthusiast.
