Similar to the preceding book The Ruby in the Smoke in that it's an engaging, easy to read story. Better in that it has a philosophical moment. Worse in that a good guy deliberately kills a bad guy, which bothers me morally. In the previous book, the killing done by good guys was a little more forgivable because it was more self defense.

Really good, and a great second book. Sally Lockhart definitely has to be my favourite heroine!

I didn't like this one nearly as much as I liked The Ruby in the Smoke, but I think it's because this was a much darker, more complicated story. I was actually quite saddened by it, particularly the [SPOILER OMITTED] of a character towards the end. At that point, I thought I'd rather not read/listen to the next book in the series, but Pullman brought me back with the last chapter. I do so like the characters involved, particularly Jim, and I want to see how Sally's life plays out. A sad read, but a 5-star mystery that will keep readers guessing until the last page.

Again, what is not to like about the wonderful Sally Lockhart. Good adventure and great reading...go get it today!

Second in the Sally Lockhart series. These are not usually the types of books that I read, but I loved the other Philip Pullman series and found this a quick and engaging read. This was where the issues of political and social injustice start to appear, along with the questionable ethics of lending one's craft to an evil purpose.

Good fun - for adults and kids. Much much better than the terrible tv adaptation with Billie Pipper...that was dreadful. Wish they had kids books like this when I was a kid. Tv adaptation doesn't do it justice.
