After the first few paragraphs, this book already had my attention. Recommended by a friend of mine & well worth the read. An intriguing tale of Sally Lockhart - independent and feisty. I thoroughly enjoyed this & look forward to reading more by this author.

16-year-old Sally Lockhart unravels web of murder, theft, smuggling and fraud surrounding her father's death in 1870s London. Fast-paced fun for juvenile adventurers, with less stultifying mysticism than the Dark Materials series.

"Real, fleshed out characters and atmospheric locations effectively described. The evil old lady shouldn't be a threat but she is one of the most menacing characters I've ever come across."

I have alway been a fan of stories set in Victorian England (probably because of my fondness for Sherlock Holmes), and if you like that sort of thing, you'll really like the Sally Lockhart mysteries. They're nothing like The Golden Compass, etc., so if you didn't like the "His Dark Materials" series, you should still give this series a try.

After watching the television adaptation of this (rented from the library, thank you BBC), I decided to get the audiobook. The adaptation is surprisingly faithful to the book -- little happens in the novel that doesn't on screen as well. It's a fun adventure, suspenseful and welcoming all at once. Looking forward to the sequel.
