I'm not into chick lit, so I never would have chosen this. I just picked something at random from Durham PL, and I picked a good one! I just wish the ending was fleshed out a bit more and the society ladies had more character development. I s...pent the whole book waiting for them to get their comeuppance, but I didn't get as much satisfaction as I wanted. The author does leave a lot of your questions unanswered, so fill in the blanks how you like.

I am so sad that this book ended . It was one of the best books that I have read .It is a story that will grip at your heart strings and you will be left thinking about the characters long after the book is read. Set in Jackson , Mississipi in the 1960's ,
it a story of 3 brave women who dare to write about the plight of black women who work as maids in white homes. It is not a pity party , it is beautiful well written story that is sad and funny in parts. The characters are believable and interesting.
I would highly recommend this book.

"Another white lady trying to make a dollar off of colored people." This is the opinion of a young African American domestic worker about the book's white narrator, Skeeter. It is my opinion of Kathryn Stockett, the book's author. The Help is about the plight of domestic workers in 1960's Mississippi as much as Hogan's Heroes was about World War II. It is outrageous that a privileged white female author would pretend to present the point of view of African American domestic workers even in a work of fiction.

I will be finishing this tonight just in time for my book club, and it was AH-MAZ-ING. An interesting look at the civil rights movement and the effect racism had on an entire state, community and the specific view of black women who waited and lived and raised white women's children. A serious book with humor-filled moments that made you cringe and cry. Absolutely awesome.

The Help was an easy, amusing read - but filled to the brim with southern cliche and implausable plot lines. It left me wanting to hear real stories by women who lived the truth of the situation - without the 'make this a movie' theatrics.

This was an interesting read written from a view point that's seldom seen. 2 black women living in the South in the 60's narrate their experiences working as maids in white households. They are telling their story to a recent college graduate who aspires to be a writer and who hopes for change and is risking her standing in the community by interacting with them. It's sad and funny at times filled with irony and at the end one feels that the lines that separate people are often created by themselves.

A book about a book, The Help is set against the background of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. It describes the lives of the black housemaids of Jackson, Mississippi and their relationships with the white families they serve. A young white woman organizes and leads the maids in the effort to put together a book that tells of their experiences as maids and the circumstances, both loving and hateful, found with their employers. Thick with colorful plot (almost soap-opera-ish at times) The Help is a real page-turner.

Great story told through three very different voices. I thought it would be hokey, but it turned out to be enthralling. I couldn't wait to finish it, but in a good way. I thought the story was fabulously authentic for the time period, and I grew to love all the characters. I recommend it and can't wait to see what else the author cooks up (this was her first book). Success!

The Help started out well but it soon became clear that Ms. Stockett was going to play it safe with stereotypical characters and situations (not to mention a red herring). Entertaining at times but the ending is laughably unrealistic. If you like your historical fiction sanitized, you'll enjoy The Help.

I like that the book was written with mulitple narrators telling the story. The story did keep my attention and I did want to continue reading however, I kept wishing I was actually reading the book that was being written in the story rather than the novel that I was reading. This book is written by a white author who grew up with an African American Maid. I would have preferred to read a real account written by the Maids. I wouldn't really call this book "historical fiction" but rather "just fiction".

Great book! I had one moment of difficulty in the middle of the book when I thought a plot twist was trite and unrealistic, so I put the book down for a while. I picked it up a few weeks later and didn't set it down again until I was done. This is a story whose characters grip you and you'll remember. I absolutely recommend this book.

The subject matter of this book- maids in Mississippi telling their side of caring for white families and babies- would not be something I would have ever thought would be such an exciting and intense read. I highly recommend this book. Miss Hilly is the most hateful villain I have come across since Delores Umbridge. If you haven't read it, you have no idea what a great story this is. It also offers a really unique perspective on what it is like to be "The Help".

This book was a good read. I could'nt put it down, I would even read it in the morning, however I could see the end coming and was wondering why there was'nt a few more chapters.

The Help made me think about the different views, prejudices and behaviour towards other people... It takes place in the 50's and it's hard to imagine that life was like that. Looking on the present day and age I trust that humanity will only continue to improve with time...

This is a great book. Easy to read and a enlightening and entertaining look at the relationships of the 'help' and their employers in the homes of the south in the mid 60's.

The author made you feel the pain and triumph of the women in this novel. Story set in Jackson, Mississippi in the '60s with focus on the personal side of Civil Rights in the South. Stories discuss hardship, friendship, love and survival. Story as a whole points out the the only dividing line we see is the one we have in our own mind. Perfect for opening eyes to what I was not alive to witness. Good story through and through.

I laughed and cried throughout this entire book. Most of it will break your heart. Having grown up in the South, it was mostly a painful and shameful reminder to me of how things STILL are there, and one reason why I left once I finished college. However, it was just touching enough to bring a wistful and nostalgic smile to my face after I turned the last page.
