I love how Nabokov writes - he has a precise and unique way of describing the world. The problem here was my lack of patience with the plot. You know how sometimes you'll discover you've read a page but you weren't paying attention, and then you could choose to either barrel forward or go back and make sure you're clear on what's going on? Well, I mostly pushed on in this book - The Defense dwells on the breakdown of Luzhin, the protagonist chess master. His cycle of anxiety is just that: a cycle. It didn't take long before I realized that if I didn't absorb a particular passage, the same sentiment would come around again in a few pages, after some trigger set him spiraling downwards again. Nabokov wrote beautifully, but his characters ended up feeling tired and worn.

Boyd calls it his first masterpiece, which made me suspicious. But I couldn't put it down. Even convinced by the ending, absolutely expected even without all VN's foreshadowing. Chess as ultimate passion. A quick invigorating read.
