A military-oriented fiction depicting the old Soviet under the Communist Party rule aiming to annex the Middle Eastern block, through the invasion of the adjoining NATO countries like Iceland and West Germany. The plot revolves around the military operatives, rather than the underlying politics. This is a tedious book not likely to appeal to the mass, with detail description of warfare hardware. While one or two stories around key characters are interesting, it fails to draw those readers who are not interested or familiar with the military operation. Even the ending fails to bring about surprise that would thrill the readers, with a predictable outcome to a conflict of super powers under the old cold war setting.

To me, this is THE defining piece of military fiction. Reading this book forever raised my expectations of what a novel can accomplish. From the highly accurate technical detail to the myriad of units and characters to the mixed unit tactics, acts of heroism, and nail-biting moments of tension, everything this novel attempted, it accomplished.If you are a Clancy fan or have any interest in military fiction, you owe it to yourself to read this book. The only downside is that you may never enjoy another mil-fic book as much again.

Another of my all time favorites. I prefer it to any of the Jack Ryan series in terms of story, characters, and action.

Good Clancy book, but has some weak points. The East German opposition to chemical weapons is never explored, and a USSR-US book written in 1987 should have exploited the Polish Solidarity movement, but maybe that's 20/20 hindsight.

A deep, involved story. Epic in scope and takes the reader to many aspects of WWIII. Well worth the read.
