Too many sausage references. Also, pretty unrealistic overthrow of the Chinese government.

One of the later Clancy books. By this point, Clancy was famous enough that he could write whatever he wanted and his editors could not refuse his often-crass work.A real shame since early Clancy novels were good. This one was crap!

Just re-read last month, still thinking the ending is a kind of fantasy of Chinese, though Tom Clancy is a non-Chinese. However, Jack Ryna might be the first American President refused to take Airplane One to excape from disaster, not the US President of 2012.

Showed that Clancy wasn't the same writer anymore. The love affair between Nakamura and the Chinese secretary was painfully awkward.

Before reading this book, I would recommend reading, Debt of Honor. Otherwise, if you are a jack Ryan fan, you might wonder, when and how, he became President of the USA. The book has a lot of the same characters, so, it is easy to feel at home. Unfortunately, I read a paperback version. The print is smaller, and I had to stay focused in on who was doing what to whom. It is not one of my favorite Jack Ryan adventures.

This book is a good example of how Clancy has declined as an author. After the amazing success of "Rainbow Six," I had high hopes for this novel. I was sadly disappointed. I would recommend reading it if you are a major fan of the Ryanverse series, but if you aren't familiar with it, I'd avoid this book.

The war action in this book is good, but those who have read "Executive Orders" and "Red Storm Rising" will be expecting more.

When dealing with China, Clancy has failed to do his homework. He can write forever about Russian culture, but he isn't well versed on the Far East.

I enjoyed this novel, but I feel that this went a little beyond levels of realism. I like the way he used the longing the Chinese have for Siberia, but the scenario he created for the invasion just didn't ring realistic with me, unlike some of his other scenarios. Of course, as a resident of Taiwan, I like that the US has recognized the country in this storyline. However, the Vatican does not have a nuncio in Beijing (the Holy See has relations with Taipei) and while there are people high up in the Chinese elite who hold the US and Russia in disdain, that they would start a war over this is reaching. Furthermore, the notion that NATO would invite Russia as a full member just doesn't ring well.

Yes, I know this is fiction, but even fiction has to have some dose of realistic plot development, and this one falls short. Regardless of that (and the repeated misspelling of Guangzhou), it was an enjoyable read.

The first book I read from Tom Clancy and after this no looking back..I just love the way the war has been described along with the diplomatic stances... amazing book worth a read any number of times... Man.. Tom Clancy rocks when it comes to juggling of Emotions, Diplomacy, war strategies, spy network and on top of that His way of expressing things!!!

The worst in his series ever. The writing is not as sharp as other books. Very biased point of view. From the book you can tell Tom Clancy did not know China well due to lack of research. I bet he got all the images from those old Taiwanese or people from Hong Kong living in the State rather than by travelling to China to see it by himself. I almost gave up reading it.

Horrible. Shallow. Boring. I skipped pages without any regret. And please, its ok to be a patriot, but laying it on too thick is an insult to the intelligence of the reader.
Completely avoidable.

Unlike Rainbow Six, which offered a decent amount of well-narrated action, Bear and the Dragon is slow-paced throughout. So slow, in fact that unless you're a Clancy-ite, that I predict you will, as I did, need to put the book down to read something more exciting.

Not the best Clancy book I've ever read. It was really good right up to the end, when suddenly it went all rainbows and unicorns and fluffy bunnies (Hooray!) on me.

And I'm sorry, you'll never convince me a US Marine would knowingly, willingly drop the President of the United States off in the blast zone of an inbound nuclear weapon. Talk about suspending disbelief....
