Excellent book. Ignore the movie - it nowehere near approached the interweaving of plot lines, the dry humor and the sheer tension of the book

I read this book as a Sophmore in High School. Several years down the line, when I'd heard they were making a movie, I had no idea how they would pull it off. However, the book and the movie are completely separate entities. Don't make the mistake of assuming there's any real overlap. In my opinion, this is Tom Clancy's most fiction-reader friendly sort of novel, but that doesn't say much!

I clicked on this title, then realized it says it's the movie tie-in. I read this book long before they made the movie. I like Clancy's workman-like writing style. I have all his fiction novels, and one non-fiction.

Not my favourite of the Jack Ryan series, but having just read it again, it asnt as bad as I remembered. dealing with a terrorist threat to explode a atomic bomb in the States, it starts slowly building to an exciting climax.

My favorite book by Tom Clancy, I read it in one sitting (very rare for me). One of my favorite books of all time. The first novel I read in one sitting.

I read this book in eighth grade and found it confusing. I had trouble following the plotlines because I could never remember who was who. Now I am in college and I think I want to try to read it again and see if it makes more sense because I am a much better reader now. Oh, it was a million times better than the movie. The movie starts half way throuh the book, leaves out principle charactes and messes with the ones that remain. Don't watch the movie if you are looking for a comparison to the book.

A very good book! Will definitely test your reading abilities, if ya know what I mean :) The ending is a bit too short for such a complex plot, but that is the way the author wanted it to be i guess. Excelent detailing and characterization. Reading this book would make one feel that Dan Brown is a children's story writer (no offence to Dan Brown's fans. Peace among all!) Superbly entertaining and guaranteed to keep you glued till the end. A friendly warning: Reading this in the very early stages of one's reading career (if I may) might be a mistake. Happy reading!

I enjoyed this book. It was a bit too detailed in places so I skimmed that. There's a limit to how much I want to know about the bombs etc!!!! But what is amazing is that this was written in 1991 and Clancy was anitcipating the sort of terrorist activity of 9/11. Admittedly there was a lot of terrorist activity world- wide then and it was probably not difficult to extrapolate BUT he had insight. It is worth a read :)

Okay, so this book is over a 1000 pages long. The story has plenty in it but it does all kinda fizzle out at the end. It has rekindled my interest in Clancy novels tho', and i will be looking at getting hold of a copy of The Hunt For Red October next - i last read it when i was 14........

I have read all of Tom Clancy's books--they are spellbinding. I have enjoyed seeing the movie interpretations with Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, and Harrison Ford in lead. Not so much Ben Affleck--he was too green to play the character of Ryan.

The only downside to this book is that my copy has Ben Affleck dumb mug on it. Otherwise, an amazing main storyline with interesting side stories (ie: The trees headed for Japan, the sub commanders, etc.) Agreeing with pretty much everyone else, the book is much better than the movie, because the producers were too scared to tell the actual story for fear of offending the Islamic community. Which got rid of some of the best characters. Great book, mediocre movie. Don't miss this book. But try to get one of the covers without Ben Affleck on it.
