This is the first western I've read. It was okay. Dialog was dry and very cow-poke-ish.

Never really a fan of the western but oooowee...love this and the sequel "Resolution"...great fun.Not just a western, but a great character study.

I have never finished a book feeling like I knew the characters as well as after reading this one. Parker is a genius. I love virgil and hitch and I think I might actually hate Allie.

Can't wait for the movie in the Fall of 2008... Viggo Mortenson, Ed Harris, Jeremy Irons and Rene Zelwiger is perfect casting!!! I can't wait for the movie!

Reads like a bullet train! Rapid Fire! A crackling yarn about the old west at a time when you better have a gun or two on your side to stay alive! Soon to be a movie!

This was the first Robert Parker novel I had read. A classic western yarn about male bonding, gun slinging, and the black and white perceptions of justice in the American west. Do not expect the gritty historical details of Terry Johnston or the well drawn characters of Larry McMurtry, but enjoy the book as a simple western. It is worth the read.

Hawk and Spenser - er, Virgil and Hitch - tame the frontier in this, Parker's second foray into the Western genre. Thankfully, it's far more successful than the steaming pile of cowchips that was Gunman's Rhapsody, despite being slightly derivative (Hitch has a resume that reads more than a bit like Wyatt Earp's, and Virgil - well, he was an Earp brother, too). Throw in a couple of doughnuts and you could just as easily be reading a Spenser novel, but Parker's laconic style of man-wit translates well to the Old West. Bonus points for the lead female not being a carbon copy of Susan Silverman. A fast, furious read that hopefully will not suck as a movie.

Very good story and reminiscent of typical Parker. My only complaint is the story never really had a climas and seemed somewhat incomplete.

This book is not the usual Western one would expect. I liked the authors short sentences and lack of description. This way the reader can use her own fantasy to develop the story. The short chapters made it easy to read and it's really not a very long story. But... I really wasn't pulled into the book. It was a sort of casual reading and I did pick the book up, only to finish it quickly. It sure is a bit better than average because of its ending. For me that was unexpected and I'm still chewing on it. Is it a happy one, an open one, a sad one... I can't pin it! I am looking forward to see the movie though. I always pictured the already cast actors in their roles and it will be a good one, I'm sure.

A simple great western. Sparse in description, very dialogue intense. The relationship between two long time friends is what this book is really about. Loved it..

Sorry RBP, you may be my favourite author, but give me Spenser, Sunny or Stone any day. This was the second time I have read this novel (yes, wasn't much at the library this week!). Wanted to read it before I read the sequel (Revolution?). I couldn't remember much about it. I find it interesting that all of RBP's non-lead female characters are such self-absorbed, manipulative, smug women (Susan, Jen, Allie?!!!). Again, it is the relationships between the characters that are interesting (Virgil and Everett) - like the Spenser/Hawk cameraderie. Despite not actually caring too much about this book, I still love the dialogue!
