This is the second Patricia Cornwell I've read. Of course, I love all the local references - makes me feel at home. :-) Her writing is not like any others I've read before. It is personal, down-to-earth... sometimes choppy and difficult to follow, but I find that refreshing and real... not unlike notes that someone has written. The first-person view, combined with her style makes you feel as though you could be Dr. Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia. Her character is laid before you as an 'average' person in a great position. You become comfortable with her quickly and it is easy to slip right into her character. The story is riveting. Scary enough... but not overdone. I found myself completely caught up in the pursuit of a maniac killer who's activities come a little close to Dr. Kay's world. I was a little disappointed in the ending - it was a bit abrupt. I wish Ms. Cornwell has pursued the twisted relationship the killer thought he had with Dr. Scarpetta just a litte more. But still, it was a great read!

Entertaining and nothing more, as usual. I always think Patricia Cornwell is a little too hasty for my taste. Kay Scarpetta is one of the most unappealing characters Ive ever read, don’t know why. I would prefer Cornwell to deepen the killers personality, it would make her books much more interesting.
