If I hadn't been on holiday reading this, I'm not sure i would have finished it. When after 150 or so pages not a whole hell of a lot seems to have happened, I would ordinarily have given it up as a bad thing.

I'm glad I stuck with it, because though it seems very slow to get going, Echo Burning is actually pretty damn good. The slow build actually helps in the end, building the tension and making the final chapters nail biting.

Good stuff, though certainly not his best.

Another action-packed Lee Child blast. His Jack Reacher is The MAN.

Not the best Reacher novel but not the worst either.

Not as good as the others - it actually took me a couple of months to read.

I enjoy the Reacher series, but found this one labored and too contrived. The coincidences became too much and Reacher as Prince Hamlet ("do I get involved?") did not work. Finally, his endless descriptions of the Texas landscape added little; it's not his strength. It was as if Lee Child tried to hard to capture an environment that he did not know. Made me think of Elmore Leonard's advice to take out the parts people skip over. Also made me think of James Lee Burke, who does landscapes well.

This was my least favorite Reacher novel so far. Just didn't grab me. I've read all of them except the latest one.
